The Experience of 1,000+ Weddings & the Art of Castle Light
Having photographed more than 1,000 weddings across Ireland and beyond, I’ve learned that experience is about more than anticipating moments. It’s also about understanding light — knowing when to embrace it, when to work with the shadows and how to preserve the atmosphere of a place.
Markree Castle is somewhere I return to regularly, photographing weddings throughout the seasons. Over time, I’ve developed a deep understanding of how daylight moves through its historic interiors, how the castle changes on overcast afternoons and how to approach photography during the shorter days of winter.
I don’t fight the darkness of a castle. I work with it. Deep shadows, soft window light and the warm glow of historic rooms are all part of its character. I favour available light whenever it serves the moment, introducing carefully controlled flash when needed — not to erase the atmosphere, but to preserve it.
My aim is always the same: photographs with depth, natural emotion and a genuine sense of place, while giving couples the freedom to enjoy their wedding day.
