The day before your wedding can be much more than simply arriving at Markree Castle and waiting for the celebrations to begin. For this couple, it became part of the wedding experience itself. We met at the castle, took some time to look around the chapel and talk through how everything would work the following day, and then headed out for a relaxed pre-wedding photo session.
Without the timeline of the wedding day, we had time to create portraits at an easy pace and enjoy the surroundings without needing to rush back to the ceremony or reception. For couples travelling to Ireland for a destination wedding, this can also be a lovely way to settle into Markree Castle, become comfortable in front of the camera and start enjoying the experience before the wedding day begins.
And the evening was only just beginning. After the couple’s session, we created a series of private mini photo sessions for some of their closest guests before everyone came together for a fantasy-themed rehearsal dinner at Markree Castle.

One of the most personal ideas from this celebration came from the couple themselves. The day before the wedding, they arranged five private mini photo sessions for some of the people closest to them. Each session lasted around 15 minutes, giving every family or couple their own time in front of the camera.
I love this idea because it turns photography into something you can share with the people you care about. A mini session could be arranged for your parents, siblings, close friends or a family who has travelled to Ireland to celebrate with you. Instead of simply taking a few photographs together during the wedding, they receive their own little experience and a set of portraits that becomes part of their memories from the trip.
It also works beautifully as part of a destination wedding at Markree Castle. With everyone already together the day before, a handful of short sessions can be planned without taking time away from the wedding day itself. In this case, once the five sessions were finished, everyone changed into costume and came together again for a completely different kind of evening at the castle.
A Fantasy-Themed Rehearsal Dinner at Markree Castle
One of the most memorable ideas from this wedding was the fantasy theme the couple created for the evening before their wedding. Guests were invited to dress as fantasy and fairytale characters, and everyone embraced it in their own way. Elves, dramatic dresses, cloaks and imaginative costumes completely changed the atmosphere of the evening and made the celebration feel very different from the wedding day that would follow.
What I particularly like about this idea is that the theme came to life through the people. It did not need to transform every room of Markree Castle. The historic interiors, the bar and the character of the castle already provided the setting, while the guests and their costumes brought the fantasy world into it.
After the mini photo sessions, everyone came together for drinks and a relaxed reception around the castle before dinner. Guests could move between the rooms, catch up with friends and family and enjoy the fact that so many of them had travelled to Ireland to be there. The costumes also gave everyone an immediate reason to talk, laugh and interact, which made the evening incredibly enjoyable to photograph.
Dinner was followed by live music and Irish dancing, with the celebration moving through different parts of the castle as the evening continued. It became much more than simply a rehearsal dinner. It was a separate experience for the couple and their guests before the wedding day even began.

The Wedding Day at Markree Castle
The next morning, Markree Castle felt completely different. After the fantasy costumes, music and celebrations of the night before, the focus shifted to the wedding day itself.
The day began with preparations around the castle before one of my favourite moments of the wedding. The couple had planned a first look, but before the bride appeared, her dad dressed up as the bride and surprised the groom instead. His reaction was brilliant, and after plenty of laughter, the real first look followed.
From there, the wedding unfolded through the ceremony at Markree Castle, time with family and friends, portraits around the castle and its grounds, the reception, speeches and the evening celebration, finishing with the first dance.
Rather than showing only a handful of highlights, I wanted to include a fuller selection from the wedding day here. For me, wedding photography is about building a complete story the quiet preparations, unexpected moments, ceremony, portraits, family and friends, speeches, celebrations and all the smaller moments in between. A First Look with a Surprise at Markree Castle
The couple had planned a first look at Markree Castle, but before the bride arrived, there was one surprise waiting for the groom. His dad stepped in first, dressed as the bride, turning what should have been an emotional first look into one of the funniest moments of the day.
After plenty of laughter, it was time for the real thing. The bride arrived and the mood changed completely. Photographing both moments one after another made this one of my favourite parts of the wedding story — a perfect mix of humour, personality and genuine emotion.

At Markree Castle, I normally keep this part organised and relaxed, choosing a location that works with the light, weather and timeline so everyone can quickly return to the celebration.

The Dining Room is always one of my favourite spaces to photograph at Markree Castle, especially once the tables, candles and flowers are in place. Wedding speeches do not always have to happen around the dinner tables. At Markree Castle, the grand staircase creates a beautiful setting for bringing everyone together, with guests gathered throughout the Grand Hall and around the stairs while the speeches take place.
For this wedding, the staircase became part of the celebration itself full of laughter, reactions and emotional moments between the couple, their families and friends. It is a great example of how using different spaces around Markree Castle can make the wedding feel more personal while also creating a completely different atmosphere for the photographs.

Photographing a wedding at Markree Castle is about more than knowing where to take beautiful photographs. After working at the castle many times over the years, I know how the day tends to flow, how long it takes to move between different parts of the venue and when we need to start thinking about the next part of the day.
I like my couples to be able to enjoy their wedding without constantly watching the clock. During the preparations, I keep an eye on the timeline and check in before everyone needs to be dressed and ready. If hair or makeup is beginning to run behind, I would rather notice it early and help adjust the plan than allow the pressure to build just before the ceremony.
