A Fantasy Rehearsal Dinner at Markree Castle
The night before the wedding had a completely different personality from the wedding day itself. Guests arrived in fantasy-inspired costumes, moved through the castle for drinks and dinner, and later joined live Irish music and dancing.
It is a lovely example of what can happen when a celebration at Markree Castle becomes more than a single wedding day. The venue, the people and the idea for the evening all worked together to create a separate story before the ceremony had even begun.

The Evening Begins
Costumes, Conversation and a Castle Full of Character
Before dinner, guests had time to settle into the evening, explore the rooms and enjoy seeing everyone arrive in costume. The fantasy theme worked because it never felt forced. Markree Castle already provided the atmosphere, while the guests brought the colour, humour and imagination.
From a photography point of view, this part of the evening was less about formal portraits and more about watching people interact. The costumes gave guests an immediate reason to talk, laugh and photograph each other, which made the reception feel relaxed from the beginning.
Irish Music and Dance
The Reel Girls and an Interactive Céilí
After dinner, the evening shifted again. The Reel Girls opened the entertainment with an energetic Irish dance performance before TRAD Dispute brought guests together for an interactive céilí.
That change of pace gave the rehearsal dinner another layer. Instead of everyone simply remaining at their tables, the celebration became physical, social and unpredictable. Guests who had travelled for the wedding were suddenly dancing together, learning the steps and becoming part of the entertainment themselves.
For photographs, this is exactly the kind of atmosphere that produces real expressions rather than staged reactions. The energy came from what was genuinely happening in the room.
The Rehearsal Dinner
A Celebration With Its Own Identity
One of the strongest ideas from this wedding weekend was allowing the rehearsal dinner to feel completely different from the wedding day that followed. The fantasy clothing, candlelit tables, live entertainment and movement through the castle gave the evening its own visual language.
A rehearsal dinner does not need to imitate the wedding reception. Giving the night before its own character can make a multi-day celebration feel richer for the couple and for the guests who have travelled to be there.

Using the Castle
One Evening, Different Spaces and Different Energy
What I enjoyed most about photographing this evening was the way the atmosphere changed as people moved through the castle. Drinks and conversation felt intimate, dinner became theatrical, and the live music brought everyone together in a completely different way.
Photographically, those changes matter. A story becomes stronger when the images do more than repeat the same room and the same type of moment. Wider frames establish the setting, smaller reactions show relationships, and portraits give the couple and their guests something more deliberate among the documentary photographs.

Why I Would Photograph the Rehearsal Dinner Differently From the Wedding Day
The night before the wedding gives me permission to work differently. There is usually less structure, fewer formal expectations and more time to observe how people naturally settle into the venue.
I still look for strong portraits and beautiful use of the castle, but the priority is the atmosphere: who has travelled, who is reconnecting, how the room changes once the music starts and what the couple may not notice while they are enjoying the evening themselves.
