Where to Have Your First Dance at Markree Castle
Your first dance at Markree Castle does not have to happen in just one place. I have photographed first dances in the garden, beneath the Archway, surrounded by guests in the Courtyard and on the indoor dancefloor, and each creates a completely different atmosphere.
The photographs throughout this guide come from real weddings I have photographed at Markree Castle. Rather than choosing a location simply because it looks beautiful, think about the light, weather, season, your guests and how you want this part of the evening to feel.

OPTION ONE
First Dance in the Garden
The garden can be a beautiful choice when the weather and timing work in your favour. There is space for guests to gather around without the moment feeling crowded, while the gardens create a completely different setting from the evening reception inside the castle.
For summer weddings, the biggest advantage is often the evening light. If dinner and speeches finish at the right time, a garden first dance can happen while there is still beautiful natural light rather than waiting until complete darkness.
It also works particularly well when you want your guests involved. They can form a loose circle around you, watch the dance and naturally become part of the photographs rather than disappearing into a dark background.
OPTION TWO
First Dance Under the Archway
The Archway gives you almost the opposite experience. Instead of a large open space filled with guests, it can become a much more intimate moment between the two of you.
After dark, the architecture and existing light give the photographs a very strong shape. I can also control the photographic lighting much more deliberately here, which makes the Archway particularly useful when you want something dramatic without taking a long time away from your guests.
It does not necessarily have to replace your official first dance either. Some couples have their main dance with everyone and then spend a few minutes later in the evening creating a quieter dance or portrait beneath the Archway.
OPTION THREE
First Dance in the Courtyard
The Courtyard is one of my favourite options when a couple wants the first dance to feel like a shared part of the celebration. Guests can gather closely around you, the string lights create atmosphere after dark and sparklers can add another layer to the moment.
Photographically, what makes this work is not only the couple in the centre. I am also watching the people around them. Parents, friends and family reacting to the dance often create photographs the couple never realised were happening.

OPTION FOUR
First Dance on the Castle Dancefloor
There is also nothing wrong with keeping the first dance exactly where everyone expects it: on the indoor dancefloor with the band or DJ ready to begin the party.
This is the most weather-proof option and gives the evening a very natural transition. You have your first dance, guests are already around you and the party can begin immediately afterwards without moving everybody to another part of the venue.
For winter weddings, wet evenings or couples who simply want energy rather than a separate outdoor moment, I would never consider the indoor option a compromise. It produces a completely different type of photograph, especially once guests begin reacting around the edge of the dancefloor.
ANOTHER POSSIBILITY
What About a First Dance in the Woodland?
The woodland is the most private and unconventional option. I would think of it less as the obvious place for a traditional first dance in front of all your guests and more as an opportunity to create a quiet dance between the two of you.
For an intimate wedding, elopement or couple who genuinely loves that part of the estate, it can make sense. But I would choose it because the woodland means something to you, not simply because it is another location available for photographs.

FROM A PHOTOGRAPHER’S PERSPECTIVE
Which First Dance Location Photographs Best?
There is no single answer. I would rather photograph the right first dance for your wedding than move you somewhere purely because I know I can make an impressive photograph there.
The garden depends on weather and evening light. The Courtyard is strongest when you want your guests close to you. The Archway gives us control and intimacy after dark. The indoor dancefloor gives us energy and a seamless beginning to the party.
Timing matters just as much as location. Sometimes moving a dance by twenty or thirty minutes changes the light completely. This is why I prefer to look at the whole wedding timeline rather than deciding every photographic moment months in advance.

THE MOMENT AROUND THE DANCE
Your First Dance Is More Than One Photograph
When the dance begins, I am not trying to make every photograph look the same. I want the wider scene, the movement between you, the hands, the expressions and the people watching around you.
Some of those photographs work beautifully in colour. Others become much stronger in black and white because removing colour leaves only expression, movement and light.

FAMILY DANCES
The First Dance Can Lead Into Something More Personal
The couple’s first dance does not have to stand completely on its own. I have photographed evenings where it naturally moves into a father and daughter dance, another family dance or simply everyone joining the couple.
If a family dance matters to you, give it enough space rather than treating it as something to rush through before the party. The reactions around you can become just as important as the dance itself.
AFTER DARK
Fireworks After the First Dance
Fireworks can create a completely different ending to this part of the evening. They do not need to happen during the first dance itself. In many cases it makes more sense to let the dance happen naturally and use the fireworks as a separate moment later.
The important thing photographically is knowing they are happening. Position, timing and where the couple and guests are standing make a huge difference when the display itself lasts only a short time.
MY ADVICE
Choose the Feeling First, Then the Location
If you want everyone around you and lots of reaction, look at the Garden, Courtyard or indoor dancefloor. If you want something quieter, the Archway or Woodland may suit you better. And if the Irish weather changes the plan, do not worry. A good first dance is about what happens between you and the people around you, not whether it happened in the location originally written on the timeline.
