Greg and Melissa travelled from the United States to celebrate their destination wedding at Markree Castle, bringing their closest family and friends to the west of Ireland for a celebration that felt relaxed, personal and full of energy.
Their wedding unfolded entirely around the castle, from quiet preparations in the Butler’s Kitchen and Bridal Suite to a First Look on the Grand Staircase, an emotional ceremony in the private chapel, portraits around the estate and a lively evening celebration.
What I remember most is how naturally the day was allowed to happen. There was time for the photographs that mattered, but also plenty of space for conversations, laughter, unexpected moments and simply enjoying the castle with people who had travelled so far to be there.

THE WEDDING MORNING
Preparations Around Markree Castle
The morning began quietly in the Butler’s Kitchen, with coffee, conversations and the first signs of anticipation for the day ahead. Surrounded by family and close friends, Melissa had time to enjoy those smaller moments before everyone moved upstairs to the Bridal Suite.
As the dress was fastened and the final details came together, the atmosphere changed. These quieter transitions are an important part of the story for me: not because they need to be staged, but because they show how the wedding actually felt before the ceremony began.
Meanwhile, Greg was getting ready with his groomsmen in the Billiard Room. Its dark wood, historic details and completely different atmosphere created another side of the same morning, with drinks being poured, ties being adjusted and the group gradually preparing to head towards the chapel.
THE FIRST LOOK
A Quiet Moment on the Grand Staircase
Greg and Melissa chose the Grand Staircase for their First Look. With its sweeping shape, deep red carpet and natural light from the tall windows, it is one of the most recognisable interiors at Markree Castle, but what mattered here was the moment between them.
There were no big gestures to manufacture for the camera. A look, a touch and a few quiet seconds together were enough. Once that moment had passed, Greg joined his groomsmen in the chapel while Melissa returned briefly to the Bridal Suite.
We used that small window for a few relaxed portraits with her bridesmen before the ceremony. Keeping moments like these short and simple is part of how I photograph a wedding without allowing the photography to take over the experience.

Ceremony in the Chapel – Emotions, Vows & Whisky Toasts
The chapel at Markree Castle has a completely different atmosphere from the rest of the estate. It feels intimate and quiet, with soft light coming through the arched windows and just enough space for the people closest to the couple.
Greg and Melissa chose to make the ceremony deeply personal, with their friend from the US leading the celebration. As the ceremony began, the emotion came naturally: laughter, tears, quiet pauses and reactions from the people who had travelled all the way to Ireland to be there with them.
After the vows, the wedding party shared an Irish whiskey toast inside the chapel, poured from a vintage-style decanter. It was a small detail, but one that made the ceremony feel even more personal and connected to their destination wedding in Ireland.
These are the moments I am always looking for: not something created for the camera, but the expressions, gestures and interactions that happen when people are simply present in the experience.
After the ceremony, we stepped outside for a short portrait session around the grounds of Markree Castle. There was no need to disappear for hours. We walked through the gardens, stopped beneath the trees and simply used the places and light we found along the way.
One of those places was the old boathouse near the river, a quiet part of the estate surrounded by trees and one of my favourite locations for relaxed portraits. On the way, Fionn, Markree Castle’s Irish Wolfhound, joined us for a while and immediately became part of the story.
Before heading back to their guests, Greg and Melissa stopped for a few photographs on the main staircase and balcony, with the Irish flag visible in the background. We then used a few of the castle interiors and the atmospheric Gin Bar before bringing the portrait session to an end.

The reception brought everyone back together inside Markree Castle, with conversations, drinks and laughter filling the rooms before the speeches began. Rather than feeling like a separate formal part of the day, the speeches became another opportunity to photograph the relationships between Greg, Melissa and the people who had travelled to Ireland to celebrate with them.
And then there was Fionn. Markree Castle’s Irish Wolfhound had a habit of appearing wherever something was happening, whether relaxing beside the fireplace, wandering between guests or quietly joining a photograph. He quickly became part of the wedding story without anyone needing to plan it.
Those unexpected moments are often what make a gallery feel personal years later. The castle itself is an extraordinary setting, but photographs become meaningful because of the people, reactions and little characters that were actually part of the day.
The Dining Room at Markree Castle brought everyone together for dinner, with its tall windows, historic interiors and warm evening light creating a completely different atmosphere from the earlier parts of the day. The tables were filled with flowers and personal details, but once everyone sat down, the people quickly became the focus.
Throughout dinner there were spontaneous toasts, conversations and reactions around the tables. A roaming band moved through the room, inviting guests to request songs and turning parts of dinner into an unexpected live performance.
Greg and Melissa also brought plenty of humour to the cake cutting. Instead of treating it as another formal moment for the camera, they joked, laughed and ended with a playful cake-smash that had everyone around them reacting.

Markree Castle Wedding Party – Dancefloor Energy & Real Moments
The evening at Markree Castle quickly changed pace once the dancefloor opened. Greg and Melissa were right in the middle of it, surrounded by friends and family who had travelled to Ireland to celebrate with them.
The live band kept the room moving, from the first dance into a packed dancefloor filled with laughter, spontaneous group photographs and some very competitive dance moves. By this point there was nothing left to organise or direct. Everyone could simply enjoy the party.
For a destination wedding, I think these photographs matter just as much as the portraits or ceremony. They show what happened once the formal parts of the day were over and everyone could completely relax.

It was about bringing people together in Ireland and giving them the time to experience it.
