The Best Wedding Photo Locations at Markree Castle
One of the reasons I love photographing weddings at Markree Castle is the variety of locations available without needing to leave the estate. From the gardens and woodland to the castle itself, couples can create a very different collection of photographs within a relatively small area.

The Gardens in Front of the Castle
The gardens in front of Markree Castle are one of the most recognisable places for photographs. They give you the castle immediately in the background while still keeping the photographs open, relaxed and natural.
This area works particularly well later in the day when the light becomes softer. It is also one of the easiest locations to use for a short portrait session because you do not need to take the couple far away from their guests.
The Woodland
The woodland gives Markree Castle photographs a completely different feeling. Instead of the formal architecture of the castle, you have trees, softer light and a much more intimate atmosphere.

The Castle Exterior
Sometimes the strongest photographs are also the simplest. The exterior of Markree Castle gives you an unmistakable sense of place and works beautifully for both wide photographs and more intimate portraits.
I usually prefer to keep this part of the session short and natural rather than turning it into a long formal shoot. The castle becomes part of the photograph without overpowering the couple.
The Driveway and Open Grounds
The driveway and open areas around the estate are perfect when you want photographs with more movement. Walking, running, talking or simply giving the couple a few minutes away from the reception often creates some of the most natural photographs of the day.
These areas also allow me to work with the changing light rather than forcing every photograph into one fixed location.
Indoors at Markree Castle
Markree Castle also gives us excellent indoor options. That matters in Ireland because a wedding photography plan should never depend completely on perfect weather.
The interiors can give photographs a more elegant and atmospheric feel, while also allowing the day to continue naturally if conditions outside change.
You Do Not Need to Visit Every Location
A good wedding day is not about ticking off every possible photography location. Usually two or three places are more than enough. The best choices depend on the light, the weather, the timeline and where the couple naturally happens to be during the day.

The Best Location Is Often the One That Fits the Moment
After photographing many weddings at Markree Castle, I have learned that planning is useful, but flexibility is even more important. Sometimes the light changes, the weather clears unexpectedly or ten quiet minutes appear between parts of the day.
That is why I prefer to know the venue well and choose locations around what is happening rather than pull a couple away from their wedding for a long photography session.
