A Romantic Wedding at Markree Castle
Anna and Eoin celebrated their wedding at
Markree Castle
in County Sligo, with a day that moved naturally from quiet preparations by the river to an intimate chapel ceremony, summer garden portraits and an evening celebration inside the castle.
What I especially love about this wedding is the variety within one place. The boathouse, chapel, gardens, grand staircase and dining room each brought a completely different atmosphere to the photographs without Anna and Eoin ever needing to leave the estate.

THE MORNING
Morning Preparations by the River
The day began in the boathouse by the river, tucked away within the castle grounds. Anna and her bridesmaids had a relaxed morning filled with conversation, laughter, prosecco and even a little time out on the boat.
There was no need to manufacture moments. With enough time in the morning, the photographs could simply follow what was already happening while everyone settled into the day.
THE CEREMONY
Ceremony in the Intimate Castle Chapel
Anna and Eoin exchanged their vows in the chapel at Markree Castle. Stone archways, stained glass and the intimacy of the room gave the ceremony a completely different atmosphere from the brighter spaces outside.
One of the advantages of having the ceremony on the estate is how naturally the day can continue afterwards. There is no long transfer between locations, so the couple can move almost immediately from the ceremony back to their guests and the grounds around the castle.
THE GARDENS
Wedding Portraits Among the Roses
After the ceremony, we took a little time for photographs in the gardens. The roses were in full bloom, bringing colour and texture to the softer evening light around the paths.
Anna and Eoin were completely at ease, so there was no reason to turn this part of the day into a long portrait session. We walked, talked and photographed naturally, leaving them plenty of time to return to their guests.

BEFORE DINNER
Speeches from the Grand Staircase
Before dinner, everyone gathered around the grand staircase for the speeches. It is one of my favourite ways to photograph this part of a wedding at Markree because the layout naturally brings people close together.
From the person speaking to reactions across the staircase and surrounding rooms, there is always something happening beyond the obvious moment. Those smaller reactions are often what make the photographs feel like a memory rather than simply a record of who gave each speech.

Sparklers & First Dance Under the Stars
As evening fell, Anna and Eoin stepped outside with their guests for sparklers before moving into their first dance and the celebrations that followed.
It completed the story of the day beautifully: from a quiet morning beside the river and vows inside the chapel to summer gardens, dinner with family and friends, and finally a completely different energy after dark.
