Molly & Ross’s Markree Castle Wedding / An American Destination Wedding in Ireland

FROM MINNEAPOLIS TO SLIGO

Molly & Ross at Markree Castle

Molly and Ross travelled from Minneapolis to the west of Ireland for a celebration that became much more than a wedding day. Family and friends made the journey from the United States to join them at Markree Castle, turning their wedding into part of a much bigger Irish adventure.

Their story was later featured by One Fab Day, who described the celebration as a fairytale destination wedding in Ireland. For me, it remains a beautiful example of what happens when a couple brings the people they love across the Atlantic and gives them not simply a wedding, but an experience they can share together.

THEIR STORY

A Love Story That Led to Ireland

Molly and Ross first met through CrossFit, where Ross was a coach and Molly was training. Their relationship eventually took them to Colorado, and it was there, in the mountains near Boulder, that Ross proposed beside the water before surprising Molly again with both of their families waiting to celebrate with them back in Denver.

When it came to choosing somewhere to get married, Ireland offered something completely different. Markree Castle gave them the character of a historic Irish castle, beautiful grounds and, importantly, the feeling that the place could become theirs for the celebration.

Rather than seeing each other before the ceremony, Molly and Ross saved that moment for the aisle. Their humanist ceremony was deeply personal, with Molly’s uncle marrying them and her grandmother’s ring becoming part of the day. It was one of those ceremonies where the emotion was visible not only between the couple, but throughout their families gathered around them.

A DESTINATION CELEBRATION

More Than a Wedding Day

What I particularly like about Molly and Ross’s story is that Ireland became part of the celebration rather than simply its backdrop. Their friends and family had travelled a long way, so the experience they shared together mattered just as much as the wedding itself.

After the wedding, around 60 friends and family continued on to Galway with them for several more days together. Molly and Ross then carried on through Ireland, staying at Ashford Castle, travelling to Killarney and Cork, finishing in Dublin and spending much of the journey exploring the Wild Atlantic Way.

For couples travelling to Ireland from abroad, this is one of the nicest ways to think about a wedding here: not as one isolated day, but as the centre of a wider experience. If you are still shaping your own plans, my Markree Castle wedding inspiration brings together more real ideas for making the celebration personal and using the castle in different ways.

PLANNING FROM ABROAD

Planning an Irish Wedding from Overseas

Molly and Ross’s wedding shows how memorable an Irish castle celebration can become when guests are travelling from overseas. For couples organising everything from another country, having experienced people on the ground can also make the planning process much easier.

For couples looking for additional planning support in Ireland, I also recommend Peach Perfect Weddings. I have worked with their team on other destination celebrations in Ireland and they are particularly experienced in helping international couples bring together weddings, elopements and intimate celebrations from abroad.

PHOTOGRAPHING MARKREE CASTLE

Real Weddings, Real Experience

Every wedding at Markree Castle has its own rhythm. Molly and Ross brought family and friends across the Atlantic and made the castle part of a much wider Irish experience, while other couples choose Markree for completely different reasons — its chapel, gardens, woodland, historic interiors or simply the feeling of having an Irish castle become home for their celebration.

Having photographed many different celebrations here over the years, I have built a dedicated Markree Castle wedding collection where you can explore more real weddings, different ceremony styles and the way the castle changes from one celebration to another.

PLANNING FROM OVERSEAS
