Woodland Ceremony at Markree Castle
The woodland is one of the most distinctive places for an outdoor wedding ceremony at Markree Castle. When the conditions come together, with dry ground and light filtering through the trees, the entire space takes on a character that is completely different from an indoor ceremony.
I have photographed ceremonies here in different conditions, and this guide is based on what I see while actually working in the woodland: how the light behaves, what weather can change and why the ceremony itself matters far more than creating a location purely for photographs.

THE SETTING
What a Woodland Ceremony at Markree Castle Feels Like
The woodland gives couples a ceremony setting surrounded by mature trees rather than the architecture of the castle. Guests are brought together in a relatively intimate space and the trees create natural layers around the ceremony.
What I particularly like is that it still feels connected to Markree Castle while having its own atmosphere. The photographs below show a real ceremony rather than a styled shoot, from the empty ceremony space through the entrance, vows, rings and the couple walking back through their guests.
LIGHT AND CONDITIONS
When the Woodland Works Best
Because this is an outdoor ceremony setting, conditions matter. After prolonged wet weather the ground can naturally feel very different from a dry summer day, so the decision should always take comfort and the conditions on the day into account.
From a photographic point of view, I particularly enjoy the woodland when sunlight begins to come through the trees. The light creates separation and depth between the couple, guests and background. But sunshine is not a requirement. Soft overcast light can also work beautifully here and often gives skin tones a very gentle quality.
I would never choose an outdoor ceremony location only for a photograph. The woodland needs to work for the couple, their guests and the weather first. Photography comes after that.

Why I Enjoy Photographing Ceremonies Here
During a ceremony I want to photograph what is happening without making the couple aware of me. The woodland gives me several different backgrounds and angles while still allowing me to remain outside the centre of the ceremony.
I can move from the wider scene to expressions, hands, rings and reactions from family and friends. When sunlight is moving through the trees, I also watch how it changes rather than trying to force every photograph into the same light.

AFTER THE CEREMONY
From Woodland Ceremony to Sunset
One reason I enjoy a wedding day like this is the contrast in light. During the woodland ceremony I may be photographing through layers of trees. Later, as the sun becomes lower, the open gardens around Markree can give us a completely different look.
I do not want a couple to disappear from their wedding for a long portrait session. If good evening light appears, I would much rather take them outside for a short session, make use of what the day gives us and then let them return to their guests.
And if there is no dramatic sunset, that is completely fine. Irish weather does not need to produce a golden sky for us to make beautiful photographs.
TWO DIFFERENT KINDS OF LIGHT
Woodland Light and Open Evening Light
The woodland and the gardens can be only a short distance apart, yet photographically they behave very differently. Trees break the light into layers and pockets. Open gardens allow the remaining evening light to reach the couple much more directly.
That is why I prefer to respond to the conditions rather than follow a fixed list of photographs. If the light becomes beautiful for ten minutes, we can use those ten minutes. There is no reason to turn it into an hour-long photoshoot.

PLANNING AN OUTDOOR CEREMONY
Have a Plan, but Leave Room for the Day
If you love the idea of a woodland ceremony, plan for it, but keep enough flexibility to respond to the conditions. Outdoor weddings in Ireland work best when the plan can adapt without changing the feeling of the day.
The same applies to sunset photographs. We can know approximately when the sun will set, but we cannot schedule the clouds. I would rather watch the light throughout the day and use it when it becomes interesting.
