Markree Castle Weddings Across the Seasons
I photograph weddings at Markree Castle throughout the year, and one of the things I love about the venue is how much its character changes with the seasons. The castle remains the same, but the gardens, available light, colours and atmosphere around it can feel completely different from spring to winter.

SPRING AT MARKREE CASTLE
Fresh Greenery, Gardens Coming Back to Life and Longer Days
Spring is a transition season at Markree Castle. The grounds begin to regain their colour, the days become noticeably longer and outdoor photographs start to play a bigger part in the wedding day again.
What I like photographically is the freshness of the landscape. The gardens do not need to look like midsummer to work beautifully. New greenery, softer seasonal colour and the stone of the castle can create a quieter palette that feels completely different from weddings later in the year.
SUMMER AT MARKREE CASTLE
Full Gardens, Outdoor Celebrations and Late Evening Light
Summer gives us the longest photographic window of the year. The gardens are established, outdoor parts of the day can become a bigger part of the celebration and the late sunset means we often have another opportunity for portraits well into the evening.
That does not mean disappearing for a long photoshoot. One of the advantages of a late summer sunset is flexibility. If the light becomes beautiful later, we can step outside for a short session and then return to the celebration. I explore this season in more depth in my Markree Castle Summer Wedding guide.
AUTUMN AT MARKREE CASTLE
Changing Colour, Softer Light and a Different Mood
Autumn gradually changes the visual character of Markree Castle. Green gives way to warmer tones, the days shorten and the light can become softer earlier in the afternoon.
For photographs, I am not looking for one perfect week when every tree has changed colour. Autumn is a progression. Some weddings still feel almost like late summer, while later dates can have a much richer seasonal character. That variation is exactly why I want this collection to grow with photographs from different weddings and different parts of the season.
WINTER AT MARKREE CASTLE
Castle Interiors, Shorter Days and Winter Atmosphere
Winter changes the way I think about the photography timeline. Daylight disappears much earlier, so the time available outdoors becomes more valuable and the castle interiors naturally take on a larger role.
That is not a disadvantage. It simply creates a different type of wedding gallery. Interior portraits, evening atmosphere, candlelight and photographs after dark can sit alongside the shorter outdoor part of the day. FROM A PHOTOGRAPHER’S PERSPECTIVE
The Biggest Difference Between the Seasons Is Often the Light
Couples naturally notice flowers, foliage and weather first. As a photographer, I also think about something less obvious: when the best light is likely to arrive and how much daylight we have to work with.
A summer wedding can give us beautiful evening light much later in the day. In winter, the same opportunity may happen before dinner. Spring and autumn sit somewhere between those extremes, but Irish weather can change the character of the light on any date. That is why I prefer to build flexibility into the photography rather than plan every portrait around one exact time months in advance.
CHOOSING YOUR SEASON
Which Season Is Best for a Markree Castle Wedding?
There is no single best season. The better question is what you want the wedding to feel like. Long evenings and established gardens naturally point towards summer. Autumn brings changing colour and an increasingly atmospheric landscape. Winter places more emphasis on the castle itself, its interiors and the evening. Spring has the freshness of the gardens returning and progressively longer days.
None of those choices guarantees a particular type of weather, especially in Ireland. What matters more is having a plan that can adapt to the conditions you actually get.
