A Markree Castle Wedding Story
This wedding brought together two very different Sligo settings: a morning at
Markree Castle,
a traditional church ceremony in Sligo, and a relaxed celebration back at the castle for the rest of the day.
From preparations in the Bridal Suite to the ceremony, drinks with guests, portraits around the estate, speeches in the Dining Room and a busy dance floor later that night, the photographs follow the celebration as it actually unfolded.

THE MORNING
Morning Preparations at Markree Castle
The day began in the Bridal Suite at Markree Castle. Morning preparations are usually one of the quieter parts of a wedding day, but they are also full of small interactions that become important once you look back at the complete story.
Rather than turning the room into a set, I photographed the morning as it developed: the final details, conversations between the bride and bridesmaids, people moving in and out of the room and the anticipation building before everyone left for the ceremony.
THE CEREMONY
A Church Wedding in Sligo
After preparations at the castle, everyone travelled into Sligo for the ceremony. The scale and historic interior of the church created a very different atmosphere from the quieter morning at Markree.
Combining a church ceremony with a reception at Markree Castle works particularly well when the timeline leaves enough breathing room for the journey back to the estate. A

helps protect that time so the photography never becomes another thing the couple has to rush through.
BACK AT THE CASTLE
Reception at Markree Castle
After the ceremony, the couple returned to Markree Castle with their guests for the drinks reception. This is where the pace of the day changed again, with everyone able to settle into the castle, talk, celebrate and enjoy the afternoon together.
For me, this part of the wedding is less about directing people and more about watching what is happening around the rooms and between groups of guests. Reactions, conversations and small unscripted moments often tell far more about the atmosphere than anything I could stage.
THE GROUNDS
Relaxed Portraits Around Markree Castle
We stepped away briefly for photographs around the estate, using the gardens, riverside and the Boathouse while the light was working in our favour.
I prefer these sessions to feel like a short break together rather than a formal photoshoot. There is no need to spend an hour away from everyone. A few well-timed minutes in the right places can give us variety while allowing the couple to get back to the people they invited to celebrate with them.
DINNER & SPEECHES
Heartfelt Speeches in the Dining Room
The celebration continued in Markree Castle’s Dining Room, where the speeches brought together some of the most emotional and funniest moments of the evening.
Speeches are never only about the person holding the microphone. I am constantly watching the couple, parents, friends and tables around the room because those reactions often become some of the photographs people value most afterwards.
AFTER DARK
Dancing the Night Away
After dinner, the atmosphere changed once more as the first dance opened the evening celebration and the dance floor filled with family and friends.
Photographing into the evening gives the finished gallery its final contrast: from the calm preparations of the morning and the formality of the ceremony to movement, laughter and completely unscripted moments after dark.

This wedding is a lovely example of how a celebration can combine a traditional church ceremony in Sligo with the atmosphere and surroundings of Markree Castle.
The day did not need to revolve around photography. We used the moments that naturally appeared throughout the timeline, from preparations and the ceremony to a short portrait session, speeches and the evening celebration.
