Planning a Winter Wedding at Markree Castle
Planning a winter wedding at Markree Castle is quite different from planning the same celebration in summer. The days are shorter, the castle becomes warmer and more atmospheric, and the available natural light needs to be considered much more carefully.
Having photographed weddings here throughout the year, I find that winter works beautifully when the timeline is designed around the available daylight rather than trying to make a winter wedding follow a summer schedule.
THE WINTER ATMOSPHERE
What Makes Markree Castle Special in Winter?
Markree already has the scale and character of a historic Irish castle, but winter changes the atmosphere inside it. The shorter days bring more attention to the interiors, fireplaces, warm lighting and the rooms where guests naturally gather.
A Christmas wedding at Markree Castle has an especially distinctive atmosphere. Large Christmas trees are traditionally placed around some of the castle’s most recognisable interiors, including the main staircase, the Billiard Room and the reception area near the piano. There is also usually a large tree outside the castle, creating another opportunity for photographs after dark.
The result is not simply a summer wedding moved indoors. Winter gives Markree its own visual identity, particularly once the evening lights, fireplaces and Christmas decorations begin to take over.

Building a Markree Castle Winter Wedding Timeline
The biggest difference I notice when photographing Markree Castle in winter is not the weather. It is the amount of daylight available.
In December and January, the window between the ceremony and darkness can become very small. That matters most for family photographs and couple portraits, because these are the parts of the day where I want to make the best possible use of natural light.
For me, good Markree Castle winter wedding photography begins with the timeline. I normally work backwards from the available daylight and protect enough time for the photographs that benefit most from it.
Rather than seeing the shorter day as a limitation, I normally help couples plan around it in one of two simple ways.
OPTION ONE
A First Look Before the Ceremony
A first look is one of my favourite solutions for a winter wedding at Markree. It allows us to use the best part of the daylight for the couple portraits before the ceremony. We can normally photograph the first look and then spend around 35–45 minutes creating the main portrait session without rushing.
Afterwards, there is still time for the groom to return to the Chapel before guests arrive, while the bride can take a break, refresh her makeup and prepare for the ceremony. After the ceremony, we may only need a few additional portraits, or the couple can simply stay with their guests and enjoy the celebration.
OPTION TWO
An Earlier Ceremony
If a first look is not for you, an earlier ceremony can solve the same problem. For a mid-winter wedding, a ceremony around midday or early afternoon can leave enough daylight for family photographs and couple portraits afterwards.
The exact timing should always be planned around the wedding date rather than a fixed rule, because sunset changes considerably across the winter months. This is why I prefer to build a winter wedding timeline around the actual date rather than use the same schedule for every couple.
FAMILY PHOTOGRAPHS
Why I Protect the Daylight for Family Photos
The Billiard Room is one of my favourite places for family photographs at a winter wedding in Markree Castle. Its large windows give us beautiful natural light while keeping everybody warm and close to the drinks reception.
The important part is timing. I prefer to finish the formal family photographs while there is still daylight entering the room. Once those photographs are complete, the rest of the evening becomes much more flexible.
This is one of the reasons I plan a Markree Castle winter wedding timeline backwards from the available light. A small adjustment earlier in the day can make the photography feel far more relaxed later.
AFTER DARK
Markree Does Not Stop Working When the Sun Goes Down
Once the key family photographs and portraits are finished, losing the daylight is no longer something I worry about. The photography simply changes.
The castle interiors, fireplace, Christmas lights and reception rooms create a completely different atmosphere after dark. Outside, the front of the castle can be photographed with the seasonal lighting, while the illuminated Woodland gives us another option for a short evening portrait session.
For winter wedding photography at Markree Castle, this gives us two very different versions of the venue within the same wedding day: soft natural light earlier, followed by the warmer and more dramatic atmosphere of the castle at night.
RAIN, FROST & SNOW
What If the Winter Weather Changes?
Irish winter weather is never something I would try to predict months in advance. A wedding day can bring clear skies, rain, frost, mist or occasionally snow.
The advantage of Markree Castle is that we are not dependent on one outdoor location. The castle has strong interior options, while the Chapel and Grand Hall provide indoor ceremony possibilities. Markree also offers the Castle Terrace and Landscaped Forest for outdoor ceremonies when conditions suit the day.
Snow is particularly rare in Ireland, so I would never plan a wedding around it. But when it does arrive at Markree, the estate can look extraordinary.

Is a first look a good idea for a winter wedding at Markree Castle?
It can be an excellent option, particularly when the ceremony is later in the day. A first look allows us to photograph the main couple portraits while there is still plenty of natural light and can leave much more time for guests after the ceremony.
What time should we have our winter ceremony?
There is no single time that works for every winter date. If you do not want a first look, a midday or early-afternoon ceremony can be very helpful during the darkest part of winter. I recommend checking the exact sunset time for your wedding date before finalising the timeline.
Can we still get outdoor photographs if it is cold or raining?
Usually, yes. We can work in short windows when the weather allows rather than spending a long time outside. Markree also gives us excellent interior alternatives, so the entire photography plan never depends on perfect weather.
Does Markree Castle always have snow in winter?
No. Snow in this part of Ireland is unpredictable and should always be treated as a bonus rather than part of the plan. Frost, mist, rain and clear winter days can all create very different photographs.
Where do you take family photographs during a winter wedding?
One of my preferred locations is the Billiard Room because its large windows provide excellent natural light. My priority is to complete those photographs before the daylight disappears, leaving the couple free to enjoy the rest of the reception.
