A Markree Castle Wedding with a Sunset Portrait Session
This wedding began by the Atlantic in Enniscrone and ended in the very different surroundings of
Markree Castle.
It gave the couple two distinct parts to their story: a relaxed coastal morning and church ceremony, followed by an elegant castle reception in Sligo.
It is also one of those wedding days that shows why timing matters more than spending hours taking photographs. We photographed the beach briefly after the ceremony and later stepped outside again when the evening light became beautiful, creating a completely different set of

without taking the couple away from their celebration for long.
THE MORNING
Wedding Preparations in Enniscrone
The day started on Main Street in Enniscrone, where the bride and groom prepared in nearby homes surrounded by family and friends.
Starting the story away from the venue gave the photographs a strong sense of place. The atmosphere was intimate and familiar before everyone made the short journey to the church for the ceremony.
THE CEREMONY

The ceremony took place locally in Enniscrone, bringing everyone together before the journey to Markree Castle.
Church ceremonies and castle receptions can work beautifully together when enough space is left in the schedule for travel and unexpected moments. I would always rather build some flexibility into the day than turn the journey between locations into a race against the clock.
BY THE ATLANTIC
A Short Stop at Enniscrone Beach
After the ceremony, we made a short stop at Enniscrone Beach with the bridal party. The Atlantic, wind and open landscape gave us something completely different from the castle photographs that would come later.
It did not need to become a long photoshoot. A few minutes were enough to capture the energy of the group and give this wedding story a genuine connection to the place where the day began.
ARRIVING AT MARKREE
A Garden Reception at Markree Castle
Back at Markree Castle, guests gathered outside for drinks and conversation while the couple had time to enjoy the reception rather than immediately disappearing for photographs.
This is one of my favourite parts of photographing weddings at Markree. The gardens and castle give us plenty of photographic possibilities, but there is rarely a reason to use all of them at once. I can watch the light throughout the afternoon and choose the moments that make the most sense.
GOLDEN HOUR

After the speeches, the evening light began to change. Rather than scheduling a long portrait session earlier in the day, we stepped outside for a short walk through the castle grounds while the light was at its best.
Sunset can transform the look of the gardens very quickly. When the conditions are right, ten or fifteen well-timed minutes can create some of the strongest photographs in a full wedding gallery while still allowing the couple to spend almost the entire day with their guests.
This is why I prefer to build flexibility into a
relaxed wedding day timeline.
We do not have to force photographs at a particular hour. We can respond to the weather, the light and what is actually happening on the day.
AFTER DARK
From First Dance to a Full Dance Floor
Once the evening celebrations began, the pace changed again. The cake cutting and first dance opened the final part of the story before family and friends filled the dance floor.
That contrast is what I want a complete wedding gallery to preserve: the quiet moments of the morning, the ceremony, the Atlantic coast, the elegance of Markree Castle, a few minutes of beautiful sunset light and finally the energy of everyone celebrating together.

Some of my favourite Markree Castle wedding photographs happen when we stop trying to schedule every photograph in advance and simply watch what the day gives us.
On this wedding day, the evening light gave us the opportunity to step outside for a short sunset portrait session. It took only a small part of the evening, but created a completely different chapter in the finished gallery.

When is the best time for sunset wedding photos at Markree Castle?
The best time depends on the season, weather and direction of the light on the wedding day. Rather than relying on one fixed time months in advance, I watch the conditions throughout the day and suggest stepping outside when the light is genuinely worth using.
How long does a sunset portrait session take?
It does not need to take long. When the light and location are right, even ten or fifteen minutes can be enough to create a strong set of photographs without taking you away from your guests for a significant part of the evening.
What if there is no sunset on our wedding day?
Nothing needs to be forced. Soft cloud, changing weather and the castle interiors can all create beautiful photographs. Sunset is an opportunity when it appears, not something your wedding photography should depend on.
Where can we take wedding photos at Markree Castle?
The estate offers several very different settings, including the gardens, riverside, Boathouse and historic castle interiors. I choose locations according to the light, weather and flow of the wedding rather than trying to visit every possible photography spot.
Do we need a long photoshoot to get a varied wedding gallery?
No. A complete gallery is created throughout the entire wedding day. Portraits are only one part of it. Preparations, ceremony, guests, reactions, speeches and dancing are equally important to the finished story.
