Markree Castle Elopement / An Intimate Wedding in Ireland

A REAL MARKREE CASTLE ELOPEMENT

Just the Two of Them in Ireland

This intimate elopement at
Markree Castle
was almost as small as a wedding can be. The couple travelled from America to Ireland and chose to experience the day without a traditional guest list, large reception or complicated schedule.

With Nicole from The Secret Bridesmaid coordinating the day and me there to photograph it, we moved from quiet preparations inside the castle to their ceremony, portraits and a little road trip through the Irish countryside.

THE MORNING

Getting Ready in the Johnny Cash Suite

Their wedding story began inside Markree Castle, including preparations in the Johnny Cash Suite. It is one of the castle’s most distinctive bedrooms, with tall windows overlooking the gardens and enough space for a relaxed wedding morning.

The room takes its name from Johnny Cash, who stayed at Markree Castle with June Carter Cash in 1990. For an intimate wedding, spaces like this work particularly well because there is no need to manufacture a busy wedding morning. The photographs can simply follow what is actually happening.

THE CEREMONY

An Intimate Ceremony at Markree Castle

After a few photographs around the castle, the day moved into the ceremony. With no large crowd waiting and no reception schedule pushing everything forward, the atmosphere felt completely different from a traditional wedding. It was quiet, personal and centred entirely on the two people getting married.

AFTER THE CEREMONY

From Markree Castle into the Irish Countryside

One of the advantages of an elopement is freedom. Instead of moving directly into a drinks reception or dinner, we could leave the castle and turn part of the afternoon into a small Irish adventure.

We travelled to Boyle Abbey for portraits among the historic stone ruins, then stopped again along the way before eventually returning to Markree Castle.

That combination of an intimate castle ceremony and time to explore beyond the venue is what makes this story different from the larger Markree Castle weddings in my portfolio. The photographs are not simply a record of a ceremony. They follow the experience of eloping in Ireland.

A DIFFERENT KIND OF WEDDING DAY

Why an Elopement at Markree Castle Can Work So Well

What I like about photographing an elopement at Markree Castle is the amount of freedom it can give you. The castle still provides the atmosphere, architecture and sense of occasion of a destination wedding, but a tiny guest list changes the rhythm completely.

There can be time for preparations, a meaningful ceremony, photographs around the estate and even a trip somewhere beyond Markree without feeling that you are constantly leaving your guests behind.

YOUR PHOTOGRAPHER

Photographing a Wedding with Almost No Guests

A two-person wedding needs a slightly different approach. There is nowhere for a photographer to disappear into a crowd, so being relaxed and giving the couple space becomes even more important. My role is to help when needed, know where we can go for photographs and then allow the experience itself to lead the story.
