Caoimhe & Michael’s Markree Castle Wedding
When the Irish Weather Played Along
July in Ireland does not always guarantee summer weather, and for Caoimhe and Michael the decision to hold their ceremony outdoors remained weather dependent. In the end, the day opened up beautifully, giving them the opportunity to enjoy the gardens and outdoor spaces they had hoped to make part of their celebration.
That flexibility is one of the things I particularly value about photographing a
Markree Castle wedding.
The castle, its interiors, gardens and surrounding grounds give us different possibilities throughout the day, so the photography does not have to depend on one location or a perfect forecast.
Caoimhe and Michael were eventually able to use so much of Markree: preparations at the castle, time with friends before the ceremony, an outdoor ceremony overlooking the gardens, family photographs, portraits around the estate, speeches on the terrace and the celebrations that followed inside.
Getting Ready at Markree Castle
Caoimhe spent the morning getting ready at Markree Castle with her bridesmaids. Hair, makeup, wedding details and gifts unfolded at an easy pace before everyone stepped outside for a little time together in the gardens and a bottle of champagne before the ceremony.
Fionn was never far away either. He was there during the morning preparations and later became part of the ceremony and photographs around the castle. From my experience photographing weddings here, Markree is a particularly lovely dog-friendly choice for couples who want their dog to genuinely share the day with them rather than simply appear for one photograph.
Michael arrived at Markree before the ceremony, and that is where his part of the photographic story begins. Rather than recreating traditional getting-ready photographs in a bedroom, we used the castle itself: a Guinness with the groomsmen, time around the Billiard Room and bar, followed by relaxed photographs through the gardens and towards the Boathouse.
It is a useful option for couples planning their own day here. When the groom and groomsmen arrive at Markree with enough time before the ceremony, there is no need to keep everyone in one room. We can use different parts of the castle and grounds while keeping the photographs relaxed and connected to what is actually happening.

The Wedding Ceremony at Markree Castle
Until the wedding day, there was no certainty that the Irish weather would allow Caoimhe and Michael to have the outdoor ceremony they had planned. In the end, the weather played along and the ceremony could take place on the terrace at Markree Castle, overlooking the gardens.
Michael waited at the top with his groomsmen. The bridesmaids arrived first, followed by the flower girl and page boy, before Caoimhe made her way down the steps towards the ceremony. Fionn was part of this moment too, making him genuinely part of the wedding day rather than appearing only for a few photographs.
The ceremony itself was short and very personal. One of its most distinctive moments was a ring warming. The wedding bands were passed between the guests, giving everyone the opportunity to hold them for a moment and make a wish for Caoimhe and Michael before the rings were exchanged.
There were candles and a few other personal touches throughout the ceremony, without making the formal part of the day feel too long. Afterwards, everyone could move naturally into congratulations, family photographs and the next part of the celebration at Markree Castle.
Family & Guests After the Ceremony
After the ceremony, there was no need to move immediately into the next part of the day. There was time for congratulations, conversations and moments with family and friends before we began the family photographs in front of Markree Castle.
With around 150 guests, I wanted to keep this part of the day as simple and efficient as possible. We photographed the most important family combinations and a few larger groups, but beyond those, most of the photographs of guests happened naturally through conversations, laughter and time spent together after the ceremony.
Wedding Portraits Around Markree Castle
One of the biggest advantages of photographing a wedding at Markree Castle is that we do not need to leave the estate for the couple portraits. Within a short distance of the castle there are gardens, pathways, more natural parts of the grounds, the Boathouse and the architecture of Markree itself, allowing us to create photographs with very different character during one relatively short portrait session.
With Caoimhe and Michael, we did not plan one long portrait session that would take them away from their guests for an hour. Instead, we used several different locations around Markree and worked in shorter moments, adapting to the light, the weather and the natural rhythm of the day. It meant they could quickly return to their family and friends while still creating a varied collection of portraits.
This is also one of the reasons why I know the possibilities of
photographing weddings at Markree Castle
so well. For me, it is not about recreating the same few photographs in the same locations at every wedding. It is more important to watch the light, understand how the couple feels in front of the camera and choose the parts of the castle and its surroundings that work best for that particular day.
Wedding Speeches on the Markree Castle Terrace
Caoimhe and Michael’s speeches took place on the terrace at Markree Castle while their guests were still enjoying the time outside. It kept this part of the day relaxed and created a natural transition between the afternoon reception and the later move into the Dining Room.
From a photography perspective, the terrace works particularly well for speeches. The natural light, open space and guests gathered close to the couple make it possible to photograph not only the people speaking, but especially the reactions of family and friends. The gardens and character of Markree also remain part of the story rather than the atmosphere changing completely by moving this part of the day indoors.
Once the speeches were finished, the guests moved into the Dining Room for the next part of the celebration.
A Surprise for the Guests in the Dining Room
After the speeches on the terrace, the guests moved into the Dining Room at Markree Castle. The entrance itself was full of energy and marked a clear transition from the more relaxed afternoon into the evening reception.
A little later, something happened that most of the guests were not expecting. Among the waiting staff were performers disguised as waiters. At one point, one of the waitresses fell, and for a few moments the reactions around the tables were completely genuine. There was surprise, uncertainty and concern as everyone tried to understand what had happened.
Moments later, everything became clear. The waitress stood up, a microphone appeared and the performance began. The atmosphere in the Dining Room changed almost immediately. Guests started singing, dancing and waving napkins, turning part of the dinner into a spontaneous celebration.
From a photography perspective, it was one of those moments that needed no direction. The most interesting photographs came from the guests themselves: from the initial surprise, through the moment they realised what was really happening, to the entire room becoming part of the celebration.
An Outdoor First Dance at Markree Castle
Caoimhe and Michael decided to begin the evening celebrations a little differently. Instead of moving straight indoors for their first dance, they used the outdoor space at Markree Castle and danced surrounded by their guests holding sparklers.
When the weather allows, it can be a wonderful alternative to a traditional first dance indoors. There is plenty of space for guests to gather around the couple, while the evening lights, stone walls of Markree and sparklers create a completely different atmosphere from a classic dance floor.
For Caoimhe and Michael, it did not end after one song. They stayed outside for several more songs, with their guests gathered around them and sharing the moment. Only afterwards did everyone move inside, where the evening celebrations continued on the dance floor.

Caoimhe and Michael’s wedding is a lovely example of how much of the day can unfold within Markree Castle itself. Morning preparations, an outdoor ceremony, time with family and friends, portraits around the estate, speeches on the terrace, dinner in the Dining Room and an outdoor first dance all became part of one celebration without having to move between different locations.
