Some couples travel thousands of miles to celebrate at
Markree Castle.
For Nicole and Cathal, however, one of Ireland’s most distinctive castle wedding venues was right on their doorstep.
Their wedding began at home in Sligo before a traditional church ceremony at the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception on Temple Street. From there, 181 guests travelled to
Markree Castle for the wedding reception,
bringing several generations of family together for an incredibly personal celebration.
For me, photographing a day that moves from family homes in Sligo to the Cathedral and finally to Markree Castle is about preserving the relationships and small moments connecting those places. That natural, unobtrusive way of working is at the heart of my documentary approach to wedding photography.

THE MORNING
Getting Ready in Sligo
The wedding day began in two homes in Sligo, with Nicole and Cathal getting ready separately surrounded by their families and closest friends. Nicole’s morning was filled with hair, makeup, the dress and those final moments with family, while Cathal was getting ready nearby with his groomsmen.
Photographing both sides of the morning adds another layer to the story. The atmosphere is different in each house, but together the photographs show how the same wedding day was unfolding in two places before everyone finally came together at the Cathedral.
This is one of the reasons I value a
relaxed wedding day timeline:
enough space in the morning allows real interactions to happen without constantly stopping people for photographs.
Wedding Ceremony at Sligo Cathedral
From their separate morning preparations, Nicole and Cathal made their way into the heart of Sligo for their wedding ceremony at the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception on Temple Street.
The cathedral is a striking setting for a local Sligo wedding, with its colourful interior, stained-glass windows and distinctive architecture creating a completely different atmosphere from the castle celebrations that would follow. Surrounded by family and friends, Nicole and Cathal exchanged their vows before everyone continued the journey to Markree Castle.
I love this combination on a wedding day a ceremony in the heart of Sligo followed by a reception in the countryside at Markree Castle. It gives the photographs two very different settings while keeping the entire story rooted in County Sligo.
From Sligo Cathedral to a Markree Castle Wedding
After the ceremony in the heart of Sligo, the wedding celebrations continued at Markree Castle, one of the most distinctive wedding venues in County Sligo.
The change of setting gives this wedding story a completely different feel. From the colourful interior of Sligo Cathedral, we move into the gardens, historic rooms and surrounding countryside of Markree Castle. This is where we had time for family photographs, relaxed portraits of the couple and plenty of natural moments with their guests before the reception.
For me, this is one of the things that makes a Markree Castle wedding so enjoyable to photograph. There is no need to force every photograph into one location or one style. The castle and its grounds give us space to move naturally through the day, while still allowing the couple to spend most of their time celebrating with family and friends.

A Real Sligo Wedding at Markree Castle
From a wedding morning at home in Sligo and a ceremony at the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception to portraits by the river, family photographs in the Billiard Room, speeches, dinner and a packed dance floor at Markree Castle, this day was a beautiful example of how much variety one wedding can hold.
What I love most about photographing weddings at Markree Castle is that every part of the day can feel different without ever feeling disconnected. The gardens, Boathouse, river, historic interiors, Dining Room and evening celebrations all become part of one story — while the photographs remain focused on the people, relationships and moments happening within them.

Absolutely. This wedding is a lovely example of how the two can work together.
The couple celebrated their ceremony at the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception
in Sligo before travelling to Markree Castle for their portraits, family photographs,
reception and evening celebrations.
Where can we take wedding photographs at Markree Castle?
Markree Castle offers a wonderful variety of locations without needing to leave
the grounds. Depending on the light, weather and flow of the day, photographs can
be created in the gardens, beside the river, around the Boathouse, on the main
entrance steps and throughout the historic interiors of the castle.
Can we take family photographs inside Markree Castle?
Yes. Indoor spaces such as the Billiard Room can work beautifully for family
photographs and bridal party portraits. Having both indoor and outdoor options
is particularly useful on an Irish wedding day when the weather can change quickly.
Do we need a long couple portrait session at Markree Castle?
Not necessarily. I prefer to work around the natural flow of the wedding day rather
than taking the couple away from their guests for long periods. Markree Castle has
several strong portrait locations close to one another, allowing us to create a
varied set of photographs without turning the wedding into a photoshoot.
Do you photograph the reception, speeches and dance floor as well?
Yes. The story doesn’t stop after the portraits. I photograph the people and
atmosphere throughout the reception, including candid guest moments, the Dining Room,
speeches, reactions, the first dance and the energy of the dance floor. These
photographs often become some of the most personal memories in the finished wedding gallery.
