A Growing Archive of Real 35mm Film at Markree Castle

A growing collection of genuine black and white 35mm photographs created during real weddings at Markree Castle in County Sligo, Ireland.

THE FILM ARCHIVE

Real Film. Real Weddings. One Growing Markree Castle Archive.

I have photographed weddings at Markree Castle for years, following celebrations through quiet preparations, ceremonies, portraits, family moments, speeches and packed dance floors. Alongside my digital wedding photography, I now use genuine black and white 35mm film to create a smaller, deliberately selected collection of analogue photographs within those wedding stories.

This page is different from a single real wedding gallery. It is a permanent and evolving archive of my film photography at Markree Castle. As I photograph more weddings here on 35mm, new photographs will be added from different seasons, lighting conditions, parts of the castle and different black and white film stocks.

The purpose is simple. If you are considering film for your own wedding, I want you to be able to see what genuine 35mm photography actually looks like across a real wedding day, rather than choosing it from a description alone.

WHY I USE FILM

Film Has Not Changed the Way I See a Wedding. It Has Changed the Way I Choose a Frame.

I do not try to photograph an entire wedding day again on film. My digital cameras remain the foundation of the complete wedding story. Film has a different purpose.

With 35mm, I am looking for individual photographs. The final moments of bridal preparation. A laugh between people in the room. The fastening of a dress. A portrait. A detail. A quiet moment during the ceremony. A particular expression during the reception. Often, before I pick up the film camera, I already know the photograph I want to make.

That selective way of working felt surprisingly natural from the beginning. I expected film to feel slower or more difficult. Instead, I found that years of photographing weddings had already taught me the most important part: recognising the moment before pressing the shutter.

There is also something genuinely enjoyable about the physical process. Advancing the film, hearing the mechanical shutter and knowing that one frame has been committed to a physical strip of film creates a very different experience from taking another digital photograph.

TWO PROCESSES · ONE STORY

Film Alongside Digital Wedding Photography

Film is not a replacement for my digital wedding coverage. Digital photography allows me to document the complete story as it unfolds, including fast sequences, unexpected moments and everything happening between the planned parts of the day.

Black and white 35mm film sits alongside that coverage as a more selective analogue layer. I use it when a moment, expression, composition or quality of light feels right for a single intentional frame.

WHY MARKREE CASTLE

Why Markree Castle Works So Well on Black & White Film

Markree Castle gives me very different photographic environments without needing to leave the estate. A wedding can move from quiet preparations and historic interiors to the ceremony, gardens, woodland, portraits, reception rooms and evening celebrations.

That variety is particularly interesting on black and white film. Instead of colour carrying the photograph, attention moves towards light, faces, texture, architecture, movement and relationships between people.

Markree Castle itself offers several ceremony settings and very different environments throughout the estate. Couples planning a celebration here can find current venue information on the official Markree Castle wedding website.

If you are planning a wedding here and want to explore the venue beyond analogue photography, my main Markree Castle Wedding hub brings together my wider photography, real celebrations and resources created from photographing weddings at Markree.

THE GROWING COLLECTION

The Markree Castle 35mm Film Archive

This collection will continue to grow as I photograph more Markree Castle weddings on genuine black and white film. Rather than creating a new article for every film stock or wedding, the strongest photographs will be added here so the archive becomes deeper and more useful over time.

FILM STOCK 01

Ilford HP5 Plus 400 at Markree Castle

Ilford HP5 Plus 400 is the first black and white film stock in this growing Markree Castle archive. It is a 35mm ISO 400 film that gives me the flexibility to work through the changing conditions of a real wedding day, from available light during preparations to ceremonies, portraits and the reception.

I am not interested in describing a film stock only through technical specifications. What matters here is how it behaves in the situations I actually photograph and what the finished photographs feel like together. As this archive grows, the photographs below will show HP5 across different weddings, seasons and lighting conditions at Markree Castle.

For anyone interested in the technical background, more information is available directly from ILFORD’s official HP5 Plus technical information.

ILFORD HP5 PLUS · WEDDING MORNING

Preparations on 35mm Film

Wedding preparations are one of the most natural places for me to use film. There are moments I can anticipate: the final stages of makeup, a dress being fastened, a portrait by a window, friends laughing together or a quiet detail before everything begins to move more quickly.

I do not need to recreate the entire morning on film. I can watch what is happening, recognise a frame and use 35mm for that particular photograph while the complete story continues to be documented digitally.

ILFORD HP5 PLUS · DETAILS

Wedding Details on Film

Details give me another opportunity to make deliberate analogue frames without turning the wedding morning into a photoshoot. A dress, jewellery, flowers, stationery or personal objects can be photographed simply, allowing texture, shape and light to carry the image in black and white.

ILFORD HP5 PLUS · CEREMONY

The Wedding Ceremony on 35mm

During a ceremony, film becomes even more selective. The priority is always documenting the ceremony completely, while 35mm is used for individual frames that I can anticipate without compromising the wider story.

Over time, this section will include analogue photographs from different Markree wedding ceremonies and lighting conditions, showing how black and white film responds to the atmosphere of each celebration.

ILFORD HP5 PLUS · PORTRAITS

Bridal & Couple Portraits on Film

Portraits give me more time to make a film frame deliberately. I can consider the background, light and composition before releasing the shutter, while still keeping the session relaxed and efficient.

Markree Castle offers very different portrait environments within a relatively small area, from its historic interiors to the gardens, woodland and surrounding estate. For a broader collection of photographs and ideas from celebrations here, explore my Markree Castle Wedding Inspiration.

ILFORD HP5 PLUS · RECEPTION & EVENING

Reception, Speeches & Evening Frames

The reception changes the character of the day again. Guests are moving, light levels change and the photographs become less controlled. These are exactly the conditions that make the growing film archive interesting because analogue photography is not limited to quiet portraits in perfect window light.

As I continue working with 35mm at Markree Castle, this section will grow to include reception moments, speeches and evening photographs, including selected flash photography where it suits the frame.

FILM STOCK ARCHIVE

Different Black & White Films. Different Character.

Ilford HP5 Plus is the beginning of this archive, not the end of it. As I continue working with black and white film, I will photograph selected Markree Castle weddings on other 35mm stocks and add the strongest examples here.

The aim is not to collect film stocks simply for the sake of having more choices. I want to understand how each one responds to real weddings and gradually develop a personal analogue style that works naturally alongside my digital photography.

As new film stocks are added, couples will be able to compare photographs created during real weddings rather than relying on technical descriptions alone. If you find yourself particularly drawn to one of these looks, tell me. We can discuss the character you love and what may suit your wedding.

GENUINE ANALOGUE PHOTOGRAPHY

This Is Not a Digital Film Effect

Every photograph shown in the film collections on this page begins as a real exposure on 35mm photographic film. After the wedding, the exposed film is professionally developed and the negatives are scanned into high-resolution digital files.

Those scans allow the finished analogue photographs to be delivered naturally alongside the main digital wedding gallery while preserving the fact that the original image was created physically on film.

I also create black and white photographs digitally as part of my normal wedding work, but that is a separate process. This archive is specifically for photographs made on genuine 35mm film.

CHOOSING A LOOK

Can You Choose the Film for Your Wedding?

As this archive expands, you will be able to see examples made with different black and white film stocks. If one particular look stands out to you, let me know.

I would rather begin with the photographs you are drawn to than ask you to choose a film from a technical list. We can then talk about the character you like and I can consider the wedding, location, available light and the way I plan to use film during your day.

The final choice remains part of the photographic process, but your preference gives us a useful visual starting point.

FILM WEDDING PHOTOGRAPHY FAQ

Black & White Film at Markree Castle

Do you photograph Markree Castle weddings on real film?

Yes. I use genuine black and white 35mm film as a selective analogue addition to my digital wedding coverage at Markree Castle.

Is film replacing your digital wedding photography?

No. Digital photography remains responsible for documenting the complete wedding story. Film is used selectively for individual photographs throughout suitable parts of the day.

Is this genuine 35mm film or a digital film preset?

It is genuine photographic film. The photograph is exposed on a physical 35mm negative, professionally developed and then scanned for digital delivery.

Do you photograph colour film as well?

My wedding film work is currently focused specifically on black and white 35mm photography. I want this part of my work to develop a clear and consistent identity rather than simply adding every available film format.

Which parts of a wedding can you photograph on film?

Depending on the wedding and conditions, film can be used during preparations, for details, selected ceremony moments, bridal and couple portraits, reception photographs, speeches and evening celebrations.

Can we choose a particular black and white film stock?

You are welcome to tell me which photographs and film characteristics in this archive you are most drawn to. I will then consider your preference alongside the wedding, lighting and the way I plan to use film during the day.

How are the film photographs delivered?

The exposed film is professionally developed and scanned. A carefully curated selection of genuine black and white 35mm photographs is then delivered alongside your main digital wedding gallery.

Will this Markree Castle film archive continue to grow?

Yes. This page is designed as a permanent archive. New photographs, different wedding situations and future black and white film stocks will be added as I continue photographing weddings at Markree Castle on 35mm.
