Bride & Groom Portraits at Markree Castle
A bride and groom session at Markree Castle does not need to feel like a long formal photoshoot. I prefer to keep this part of the wedding day relaxed, giving the couple some time together while using the castle and its grounds naturally around them.
Having photographed many weddings at Markree Castle, I know how differently the interiors, stone architecture, gardens and woodland can work throughout the day.
NATURAL WEDDING PORTRAITS
A Relaxed Portrait Session Around the Castle
Markree gives us a remarkable amount of variety without needing to leave the venue. The stone entrance and castle façade create stronger architectural portraits, while quieter parts of the gardens and woodland allow photographs to feel softer and more informal.

INSIDE MARKREE CASTLE
Portraits in the Grand Hall Gallery
The gallery overlooking the Grand Hall gives us a completely different setting from the gardens outside. Dark timber, historic paintings and warmer interior light create a quieter and more architectural atmosphere.
I particularly like using the long wooden balustrade to give the couple space within the composition. It creates portraits that still feel unmistakably connected to the character of Markree Castle.
THE WEDDING SUITE
A More Private Side of Markree Castle
The Wedding Suite creates another change of atmosphere. With its bedroom, sitting room and distinctive bathroom, it feels more private than the grand public rooms and gardens elsewhere in the castle.
Depending on the wedding, photographs here might be quiet portraits, small details or completely unplanned moments between the couple. It is another example of how much variety can be found during a single Markree Castle wedding without travelling anywhere else for photographs.
AROUND THE CASTLE
Portraits in Front of Markree Castle
The front of the castle is one of the places where I like to step back and let the building become part of the photograph. The stone façade, entrance and surrounding grounds give us room for wider portraits that immediately establish where the wedding is taking place.
We do not need to stay here for long. A few minutes while moving through the grounds can add a very different scale to the couple’s portrait collection.
AFTER DARK
Fireworks & Evening Wedding Portraits
The bride and groom session does not always finish before dinner. After dark, Markree Castle gives us another completely different atmosphere around its stone archways, illuminated exterior and gardens.
When fireworks are part of the celebration, I prefer to photograph them as part of the wider evening rather than turning them into a separate production. The couple, castle, guests and atmosphere can all become part of the same photograph.

Making the Portrait Session Part of the Wedding Day
The strongest bride and groom sessions are not separate from the wedding day. They are simply a short part of it. A chance to step away together, slow things down for a few minutes and create photographs without disappearing from the celebration for too long.
At Markree Castle we can adapt everything to the weather, available light and natural rhythm of the day. Sometimes that means using the gardens and exterior, sometimes the interiors, and sometimes returning outside briefly later in the evening.

Why Markree Works So Well for Wedding Portraits
One of Markree Castle’s biggest advantages is the variety available within the venue itself. The façade and grounds give photographs a strong sense of place, while the Grand Hall, gallery and quieter interiors offer something completely different when we move inside.
That variety gives us flexibility. We do not need perfect weather or a rigid photography schedule to create a varied portrait collection. We can work with whatever the day gives us.

A Few Things Couples Often Ask
Do we need a long portrait session?
No. I prefer to keep the session focused and relaxed. We can use a few carefully chosen locations around the castle and then get you back to the celebration rather than turning the afternoon into a long photoshoot.
What happens if it rains?
Markree gives us plenty of options indoors as well as outside. We can change the order of the photographs, use the castle interiors or wait for a better opportunity to step outside rather than forcing the session into one fixed time.
Do we have to pose for every photograph?
No. I will give you direction when it helps, particularly with light, positioning or composition, but the aim is not to create a sequence of stiff poses. I want the photographs to still feel like the two of you.
Can we take more portraits later in the evening?
Absolutely. If the light becomes particularly beautiful, or the evening creates an opportunity for a completely different photograph, we can step outside again for a few minutes without repeating the full portrait session.
