Bridesmaids Getting Ready at Markree Castle
Wedding mornings at Markree Castle have their own rhythm. Before the ceremony begins and the rooms fill with guests, there is time for the smaller moments: conversations between bridesmaids, final makeup touches, champagne, nerves, laughter and the first glimpse of the bride in her dress.
This particular morning moved from the Butler’s Kitchen to the Bride’s Suite and the atmospheric rooms of the castle, giving the bridal party space to enjoy the preparations without turning them into a photoshoot. It is one small part of what makes a a Markree Castle wedding such a beautiful story to photograph.
01 / BUTLER’S KITCHEN
A Relaxed Start in the Butler’s Kitchen
The morning began in the Butler’s Kitchen, with the bridesmaids together before the pace of the wedding day started to build. Robes, makeup, conversations and plenty of laughter made this part of the morning feel relaxed and completely natural.
For me, this part of a wedding is less about creating photographs and more about noticing what is already happening. Giving everyone a little space allows the personalities and relationships within the bridal party to come through naturally.

Champagne, Portraits and the Energy of the Morning
Once everyone was ready to step outside, the atmosphere changed. The quieter preparations gave way to champagne, movement and the excitement of knowing the ceremony was getting closer.
I like to leave room for both sides of this part of the day. There are spontaneous photographs created simply by watching what happens, but there is also a place for a few relaxed group portraits when everyone is together and looking their best.

Final Bridal Preparations at Markree Castle
As the ceremony drew closer, the morning became quieter again. The final details of the dress, shoes and bouquet marked the point where preparations began to turn into the wedding itself.
These are often some of my favourite photographs from the morning because very little needs to happen. Beautiful interiors and soft window light are useful, but the real story is the anticipation and the people helping the bride through those final few minutes.

First Look with the Bridesmaids
One of the strongest moments of this wedding morning came when the bridesmaids saw the bride completely ready for the first time. There was no need to manufacture a reaction. The excitement, laughter and emotion happened on their own.

Bridal Portraits in the Billiard Room
In the final minutes before the ceremony, we used the darker wood, mirrors and character of the Billiard Room for a small set of bridal and bridesmaid portraits.
I do not believe every part of a wedding day needs to be completely candid. A little direction at the right moment can create a strong portrait without changing the relaxed atmosphere of the day. The balance between observation and gentle guidance is what allows the final gallery to contain both real interactions and photographs that feel timeless.

Why the Wedding Morning Matters
The wedding morning is not simply a prelude to the ceremony. It introduces the people, relationships and atmosphere that will run through the rest of the photographs.
At Markree Castle, I prefer to give this part of the day enough time to breathe. I photograph what happens naturally, help when a little direction is useful and avoid turning preparations into a long list of staged photographs. The result is a more complete story of how the day actually felt.
