Planning Your Wedding
Planning a Wedding at Markree Castle
Every wedding at Markree Castle can feel completely different. The chapel, gardens, woodland and rooms inside the castle give couples several ways to shape the day, and the best choices often depend on the season, ceremony plans and the kind of celebration you have in mind.
I have photographed many weddings here over the years, so this guide brings together the practical things I have learned from seeing real wedding days unfold at the castle. If you are just beginning to explore the venue, start with my Markree Castle weddings and photography, then use this planning guide to think through the details of your own day.

Ceremony Planning
Choose the Ceremony Setting First
One of the first decisions is where the ceremony will take place. Markree Castle gives couples several very different possibilities, including the chapel, gardens and woodland, while some couples choose a nearby church.
That choice influences much more than the ceremony itself. It affects how guests move through the day, how much time is needed between different parts of the wedding and how the overall timeline feels. For an example of how an outdoor ceremony can work on the estate, you can see this real woodland wedding at Markree Castle.

Season & Weather
Plan for the Season, but Keep the Day Flexible
Summer weddings can bring long evenings and more opportunities to spend time outside, while autumn and winter create a completely different atmosphere around the castle. Neither is necessarily better. They simply create different kinds of wedding days.
Irish weather is always worth planning around rather than trying to predict too precisely. A little flexibility between indoor and outdoor parts of the day can make everything feel much easier. You can see how the venue changes throughout the year in my guide to Markree Castle weddings across the seasons.
Wedding Day Timeline
Give Your Wedding Day Room to Breathe
One of the easiest ways to make a wedding day feel relaxed is not to make the timeline too tight. Portraits and family photographs do not all need to happen in one long block, and having a little flexibility makes it much easier to adapt to weather, light and everything happening naturally around you.
I usually prefer to work around the wedding rather than make the wedding work around the photography.
If you would like to see how I approach the different photographic stages of a day at the venue, I have put them together in my Markree Castle wedding photography guide.

Time Together
You Do Not Need to Disappear for Hours for Photographs
One of the advantages of Markree Castle is the variety of locations available without having to leave the estate. Gardens, woodland and the castle itself are all close enough that portraits can be created in shorter opportunities throughout the day.
That means you can spend more of the wedding with your guests rather than disappearing for a long photography session. When the light or weather gives us a particularly good opportunity, we can simply step outside for a few minutes and then return to the celebration.

Practical Planning
Budget and Wedding Packages
Budget and package choices are naturally part of planning, but prices and inclusions can change over time. Rather than repeating that information throughout this guide, I keep separate resources for couples researching the practical costs of a Markree Castle wedding.

A Photographer’s Perspective
Build the Day Around What Matters to You
The best wedding days are not necessarily the ones with the most complicated schedules. They are usually the ones where the couple has decided what genuinely matters to them and allowed enough space to enjoy it.
That might mean more time with family, an outdoor ceremony, a relaxed reception, a few minutes outside in beautiful evening light or simply keeping the structure of the day as uncomplicated as possible. Markree Castle gives you enough variety to build the celebration around your priorities rather than following one fixed formula.

Still Exploring Irish Castle Wedding Venues?
Markree Castle is part of the Romantic Castles of Ireland collection. If you are still at the stage of comparing castle venues, another property within the collection that I have photographed is Cabra Castle.
It offers a different setting and atmosphere, so seeing real weddings from both venues can be useful when deciding which feels right for you. You can explore my Cabra Castle weddings and photography for more inspiration.
