Wedding speeches at Markree Castle can move from laughter to tears within seconds. A father pauses halfway through a sentence. The best man says something nobody expected. Friends look across the table at each other. The couple laughs, cries and sometimes tries to hide both.
For me, photographing speeches is not only about the person holding the microphone. It is about everything happening around them: the reactions, the glances, the hands being held under the table and the people listening from across the room.
After photographing many weddings at Markree Castle, I have learned that speeches often reveal more about the people at a wedding than almost any other part of the day.
QUIET EMOTION

A father of the bride speech often begins quietly. There may be a few notes in his hand, a deep breath and a room waiting for the first words.
What interests me most is not only the speech itself. It is the bride watching him. A mother reacting from another table. Someone smiling before the story has even finished. Those small reactions are often the photographs that become more meaningful later.
I photograph this part of the day with as little interruption as possible. There is no reason to direct something that is already real.
LAUGHTER AND SURPRISE
Best Man Speeches and the Reactions Around the Room
The best man speech usually brings a completely different energy. Stories become less predictable, reactions get bigger and people start looking at each other before the punchline has even arrived.
This is where I watch the whole room. The groom covering his face. The bride laughing at something she has never heard before. Friends raising glasses. Parents trying not to laugh too loudly.
These reactions are a big part of why I photograph wedding guests at Markree Castle as carefully as I photograph the couple. The person speaking is only one part of the story.

When speeches take place in the dining room, the atmosphere becomes more intimate. Guests are seated close together, the room is warm and the reactions are often easier to see across the tables.
This is where I look for layers. The speaker in one part of the frame, the couple listening, someone reacting further back and the room itself creating the setting around them.
A photograph of a speech does not always need to show the microphone. Sometimes the strongest photograph is simply the expression on somebody’s face while they listen.

Why Wedding Speeches Matter in the Final Gallery
Speeches are one of the few moments during a wedding when almost everyone in the room is emotionally connected to the same story.
One person may be speaking, but dozens of different reactions are happening at the same time. That gives me the opportunity to build a sequence of photographs rather than simply record somebody standing with a microphone.
The speaker matters. The couple matters. The parents, grandparents, friends and people sitting quietly at the edge of the room matter too.

PHOTOGRAPHER’S PERSPECTIVE
Following the Story Behind the Words
During speeches I listen as much as I watch. If someone mentions a parent or grandparent, I am already looking for that person. If a story is clearly leading toward a reaction, I want to be ready before it happens.
That is the difference between simply photographing the person speaking and photographing the story moving through the room.
I do not need every reaction to be dramatic. Sometimes a small smile, eye contact between two people or a hand resting on somebody’s shoulder says everything.

I have photographed speeches in several different parts of Markree Castle, including the dining room and around the grand staircase. Each setting creates a different atmosphere in the photographs, so I work with the space and the way your guests naturally gather rather than trying to make every speech look the same.
Do you photograph the guests as well as the person giving the speech?
Yes. Guest reactions are often as important as the speaker. While I photograph the person giving the speech, I am also watching the couple, parents, grandparents and friends around the room. That is how the final gallery shows the complete emotional story rather than only the microphone and speaker.
Are wedding speech photographs posed?
No. Speeches are one of the parts of a wedding day where I normally need almost no direction. I move quietly, anticipate reactions and let people respond naturally to what is being said.
What happens if the dining room is dark during speeches?
The atmosphere of the room is part of the story, so I try to preserve it rather than making everything look artificially bright. My approach depends on the available light and the position of the guests, with the priority always being natural expressions and a consistent feeling across the photographs.
