Lorraine and Sam’s wedding began in County Mayo, with preparations in Crossmolina and Ballina before their traditional church ceremony at St Tiernan’s Church. From there, 165 guests travelled to
Markree Castle
for the reception and evening celebration.

Photographed in August 2024, their day brought together a traditional ceremony, a vintage family car, relaxed photographs around the castle grounds and a lively celebration that continued after dark.

Lorraine prepared with her family in Crossmolina while Sam began the morning with the groomsmen in Ballina. They chose not to see one another before the ceremony, so their first meeting of the day happened in the traditional way at St Tiernan’s Church.

One particularly personal detail was the vintage car belonging to Lorraine’s father. It became part of the story as Lorraine arrived for the ceremony and again as the newlyweds left the church before continuing the journey towards Markree Castle.

Making the Most of Markree Without Leaving the Wedding Behind

Lorraine and Sam planned their couple and family photographs around Markree Castle and its grounds. With a large wedding and plenty happening around them, the aim was to create the portraits they wanted without allowing photography to take over the afternoon.

Familiarity with the estate makes it possible to work around the light, weather and timeline rather than following a fixed route. I explain more about that in

From a Traditional Church Ceremony to an Evening at Markree Castle

Lorraine and Sam’s wedding moved naturally through several very different settings. The morning began separately in Crossmolina and Ballina, followed by their traditional ceremony at St Tiernan’s Church and the journey to Markree Castle for the rest of the celebration.

That change of setting is one of the things I enjoy about wedding days like this. The church brings its own sense of tradition and anticipation, while Markree gives the afternoon and evening room to feel more relaxed, social and spontaneous.

With 165 guests at the wedding, there was always something happening around Lorraine and Sam. The drinks reception, conversations, family photographs, speeches and small interactions between guests became just as important to the finished story as the portraits around the castle.

The Wedding Did Not Finish When the Light Disappeared

Lorraine and Sam’s evening continued with speeches, dinner, their first dance and sparklers. By that point the formal structure of the day had disappeared and the photography became almost entirely about atmosphere, reactions and what was happening naturally around them.

A Wedding Day First, a Photoshoot Second

The photographs from this wedding combine the parts Lorraine and Sam planned with the moments that could never have been scheduled. That balance is important to me. Portraits matter, but so do the people waiting just outside the frame, the reactions during speeches and the energy of the reception.
