A PHOTOGRAPHER’S PERSONAL RECOMMENDATION

Nicole Cosgrove

Wedding planning across Ireland, seen through the eyes of a photographer who has worked alongside her.

I’ve photographed weddings in many beautiful places across Ireland, but some of the experiences I remember most clearly are the ones I’ve shared with Nicole Cosgrove. We’ve worked together at historic castles, intimate celebrations and even on Inisheer, one of the Aran Islands, where organising a wedding involves considerably more than simply arriving at a venue.

This isn’t a recommendation based on a brochure or a list of services. It’s based on the weddings we’ve actually worked on together, the conversations before those weddings and the care I’ve seen Nicole put into making them happen.

WORKING TOGETHER

What It’s Really Like Working with Nicole

There is a lot that happens at a wedding before the first guest arrives and long after the ceremony is over. As a photographer, I get to see those quieter parts of the day: the final preparations, the conversations between suppliers, the little adjustments and the decisions that help everything come together.

Nicole is someone who gets involved. She doesn’t simply hand over a schedule and disappear. In my experience, she wants to understand what’s happening, keep everyone informed and make sure the people around her have what they need.

I’ve particularly appreciated how willing she has been to include me and the videographer in the planning process. Being part of those conversations beforehand makes a real difference. We know what the couple has planned, where we need to be and how to approach the day without interrupting its natural flow.

And from my side, the collaboration has always been a pleasure. We’ve made some wonderful photographs together, and I’ve genuinely enjoyed being part of the weddings she’s helped organise.

BEYOND THE EXPECTED

From Irish Castles to an Island Wedding

Working with Nicole has taken me into very different wedding environments. At places such as Markree Castle and Cloghan Castle, the historic buildings and surrounding landscapes become part of the story. On the Aran Islands, everything feels different again — the sea, the ferry journey, the stone walls and the slower rhythm of island life.

What makes these experiences interesting is that no two weddings require quite the same approach. The locations change, the couples have different ideas and the practical arrangements can be completely different. That’s where thoughtful preparation really matters.

A STORY I STILL REMEMBER

The Aran Islands Wedding — When Every Detail Matters

One of my favourite experiences working with Nicole was a wedding on Inisheer, off the coast of Galway. It was a beautiful, intimate celebration with around 50 guests, a ceremony at St Mary’s Church and portraits among the island’s distinctive landscapes, including the famous Plassey shipwreck.

Getting there was part of the adventure. Unlike a typical wedding at a mainland venue, we needed to consider ferry travel, accommodation and the practicalities of bringing a photography team to an island.

Nicole helped arrange the ferry journey and accommodation for both me and my second photographer. She also brought the couple, videographer and me together for planning discussions before the wedding. Those conversations meant we could arrive knowing what to expect and concentrate on capturing the day rather than worrying about the logistics.

What I remember just as clearly is the styling. The bridesmaids wore different pastel shades, with flowers and even champagne glasses coordinated to complement the colours. It was a lovely example of how thoughtful design can feel playful and personal rather than overly formal.

For me, this wedding showed two sides of Nicole’s work: the practical organisation that makes a remote celebration possible, and the creative attention that makes the finished experience feel special.

THE WEDDING MORNING

Making Space for the Moments That Matter

Some of my favourite wedding photographs happen before the ceremony. A bride laughing with her bridesmaids, a quiet moment with a parent, someone adjusting a dress or simply the atmosphere of a room full of anticipation.

These moments don’t need to be directed. They need a little breathing room.

That’s why I value working with a coordinator who pays attention to the schedule without making the day feel like a series of appointments. Nicole has been supportive of the photography process, helping with practical details while allowing me to work naturally and unobtrusively.

The result is something I care deeply about: photographs that still feel like the couple’s real wedding day, rather than a carefully staged production.

QUIET ANTICIPATION

First Looks and Beautifully Timed Portraits at Markree Castle

A first look can be one of the most personal moments of a wedding. Sometimes it’s full of laughter; sometimes it’s emotional and wonderfully quiet. Either way, I want the couple to experience it without feeling rushed or surrounded by unnecessary distractions.

Nicole and I have worked together on several beautiful celebrations at Markree Castle, one of the venues I know particularly well as a wedding photographer. Its gardens, historic interiors and the Boathouse provide wonderful settings for first looks and relaxed portraits, especially when the evening light begins to soften.

If you’re planning a Markree Castle wedding, you can explore more of my real weddings, photography and personal insights into this remarkable venue in my dedicated guide.

Working with Nicole has made it easier to plan these moments around the couple’s experience. With clear communication and a little flexibility, we can make the most of the castle’s surroundings while still leaving plenty of time for the couple to enjoy their celebration.

BEFORE THE CEREMONY

The Details Guests Rarely Notice

Just before a ceremony, there is often a surprising amount happening behind the scenes. The wedding party is gathering, guests are taking their seats, flowers and dresses need a final check and everyone is waiting for the right moment to begin.

I’ve seen Nicole take an active part in these preparations, keeping in touch with suppliers and helping the different parts of the day come together.

Whether the celebration is a larger castle wedding or an intimate elopement, these details matter. The best coordination is often the kind guests hardly notice, because they are free to enjoy the occasion.

COLOUR, FLOWERS AND ATMOSPHERE

Thoughtful Styling That Becomes Part of the Story

As a photographer, I’m naturally drawn to the details that give a wedding its character. Beautiful flowers, carefully chosen colours, the way a dining room has been prepared or how a simple arrangement works with the surroundings of a historic venue.

I’ve enjoyed photographing the styling at weddings involving Nicole. The coordinated pastel details on Inisheer are one example that particularly stands out, but I’ve also seen lovely floral arrangements and beautifully prepared reception spaces during our castle weddings.

What matters to me is that the styling feels connected to the couple and the place. When that happens, the details become more than decorations. They become part of the story we’re photographing.

THE PHOTOGRAPHY EXPERIENCE

A Wedding Timeline That Leaves Room to Enjoy the Day

One of the things I always encourage couples to do is leave space in their wedding day. Space to talk to their guests, enjoy a drink, take a quiet walk together or step outside when the evening light is beautiful.

Photography works best when it becomes part of that experience, rather than taking over.

Nicole and I have worked well together in finding those opportunities. Sometimes that means planning a first look before the ceremony. Sometimes it means taking advantage of a short window of golden light or helping the couple move comfortably between locations.

At Markree Castle, where the gardens and historic surroundings offer so many possibilities, that kind of flexibility can make a real difference.

A CELEBRATION OF TWO CULTURES

Liling & Paul — A Chinese-Irish Wedding at Markree Castle

Another memorable celebration I photographed with Nicole was Liling and Paul’s wedding at Markree Castle, a day that brought Chinese and Irish traditions together in a wonderfully personal way.

Before the ceremony, the couple shared a private first look in the castle chapel. Later, their humanist ceremony was followed by a Chinese Lion Dance — a vibrant, joyful moment that brought a completely different energy to the celebration.

For me, weddings like this are a reminder that every couple brings their own story, traditions and priorities. A thoughtfully planned wedding should make space for those differences rather than follow the same formula every time.

It’s another lovely example of the variety of celebrations Nicole and I have experienced together.

WHEN THE EVENING BEGINS

Speeches, Celebrations and a Fireworks Surprise

As the day moves into the evening, the atmosphere changes. The formalities give way to speeches, laughter, music and the kind of moments that often become everyone’s favourite memories.

At one of our Markree Castle weddings, Nicole helped coordinate a surprise fireworks display. It was a beautiful finale, and one of those occasions where good timing between the people involved really mattered.

For a photographer, surprises like this are wonderful — provided we know enough beforehand to be ready. Having a planner who communicates with the team helps us capture the moment as it happens, without asking anyone to repeat it.

MY PERSONAL RECOMMENDATION

Why I’m Happy to Recommend Nicole Cosgrove

I’ve worked with Nicole at some wonderfully different weddings, from elegant castle celebrations to an island wedding where even getting the photography team to the location required careful planning.

What has stayed with me is not just how those weddings looked, but how much thought she put into making them happen. She involved us in the planning, helped organise what we needed and genuinely cared about the result.

As a photographer, I appreciate someone who understands that beautiful photographs don’t happen in isolation. They come from the couple feeling comfortable, the day having room to breathe and the people behind the scenes working well together.

I’ve enjoyed every wedding I’ve photographed alongside Nicole. She’s enthusiastic, involved and committed to the celebrations she helps create. Based on my own experience, I’m very happy to recommend her to couples planning a wedding in Ireland.
