Lisa & Stephen’s Engagement Session in Strandhill
Photographed in 2017, Lisa and Stephen’s Strandhill engagement session is one of those earlier galleries I still enjoy returning to. The photographs have a bright, natural character and capture a relaxed afternoon together on the Sligo coast before their wedding later that year.
Strandhill was not simply a beautiful location chosen for their photographs. It was already part of their story. Stephen had proposed to Lisa on Strandhill Beach, making the coastline a natural place to return to for their engagement session.
A few months later I would photograph them again, from their wedding morning and ceremony in Strandhill to their celebration at Markree Castle. Looking back now, these photographs are the first chapter of a story I was fortunate to document from engagement to wedding day.
Back to the Place Where Stephen Proposed
Lisa and Stephen first met while studying in Galway, when they were living next door to one another and met at a house party. Years later, on Lisa’s birthday, Stephen brought her to Strandhill Beach and asked her to marry him.
That history gave their engagement session something that cannot really be created by choosing a location simply because it photographs well. Strandhill already belonged to them. My job was to give them space to enjoy it together and photograph what happened naturally.
An Engagement Session on the Sligo Coast
Strandhill works beautifully for engagement photography because there is no need to force the landscape into the photographs. The beach, open Atlantic, dunes and changing coastal light give a couple room to walk, talk and move rather than continually stopping for posed photographs.
For Lisa and Stephen that suited the session perfectly. Their photographs feel informal and connected to the place, with Strandhill providing the atmosphere rather than becoming the subject of every image.
And Then Came Markree Castle
A few months later I photographed Lisa and Stephen again, this time on their wedding day. Strandhill returned to the story, with Stephen and the groomsmen there during the morning and the couple marrying at St Patrick’s before travelling with their guests to Markree Castle.
Their 2017 wedding was later published by Mrs2Be and is now preserved by WeddingsOnline. Together, the engagement session and wedding gallery show two chapters of the same Sligo story.
A Place That Lets a Couple Be Themselves
Engagement sessions work best for me when they feel less like a formal photoshoot and more like time spent together somewhere that suits the couple. Strandhill makes that particularly easy. There is space to walk, move, talk and forget about the camera for a while.
Lisa and Stephen brought exactly that energy to their session. There was no need to build a concept around them. The coastline, their connection to Strandhill and the way they interacted with each other gave us everything we needed.
Why Strandhill Works So Well for Engagement Photos
One of the things I like most about photographing couples in Strandhill is the variety within a relatively small area. The open beach and Atlantic coastline can feel expansive and dramatic, while the dunes and surrounding landscape give the photographs a softer, more intimate character.
The weather is part of that character too. A Strandhill engagement session does not need a perfectly clear evening to work. Changing cloud, wind and softer coastal light can give the photographs atmosphere and movement, while a brighter evening creates a completely different feeling.
Rather than arriving with a fixed list of poses, I prefer to work with the conditions we have and let the couple move through the location naturally. It creates a gallery that feels connected to Strandhill without every photograph needing to announce where it was taken.
Familiar Places Can Make the Most Personal Photographs
Living and working in Sligo means places such as Strandhill are not locations I experience only when I arrive for a photoshoot. Knowing the coastline helps me concentrate less on finding a backdrop and more on the people in front of the camera.
I also think an engagement location becomes much more meaningful when there is a reason for choosing it. It might be where you got engaged, somewhere you regularly walk together, or simply a part of Sligo that feels like home. Lisa and Stephen’s session is a perfect example of that.
More Than Practice for the Wedding Day
An engagement session can certainly make being photographed on the wedding day feel more familiar, but I do not see that as its only purpose. It is also an opportunity to create photographs from a completely different part of your relationship.
There is no wedding timeline, ceremony or group waiting for you. We can simply spend some time in a place you enjoy and create photographs that belong to this particular stage of your story. Years later, those images often become an important companion to the wedding photographs rather than just preparation for them.
From Their Strandhill Engagement to Markree Castle
Lisa and Stephen’s story did not end with this session. I photographed them again on their wedding day in September 2017, when Strandhill became part of the story once more before their celebration continued at Markree Castle.
Seeing the two galleries together is one of the nicest ways to experience their story, from a place connected to their engagement to the wedding they had been looking forward to.
