The wedding ceremony took place at the impressive
Sligo Cathedral, one of the most iconic churches in the northwest of Ireland. Known for its spacious interior, elegant stone architecture, and colorful stained glass windows, it provided a truly timeless backdrop for the vows.

The Bride and Groom exchanged their vows surrounded by family and friends, with light pouring in through the cathedral windows. We began the portrait session with the Bride and Groom near the golf course at
Castle Dargan Estate. One of the most charming spots is the little bridge over the river, surrounded by greenery and the atmosphere of the course. After capturing these romantic portraits, we returned to the Coach House area, where the morning preparations had taken place. Their engagement session took place around 1:00 PM on the day before the ceremony, exploring the castle grounds, riverside woodland, and the charming boathouse — even stepping onto the castle’s little boat.

In the afternoon, the wedding party gathered for the ceremony rehearsal, guided by the Markree team.

From 6:00 PM, the atmosphere transformed into a magical, fantasy-inspired evening. Guests arrived dressed as elves, adding a whimsical touch to the rehearsal dinner, which was held in the Dining Room.

As the evening progressed, the entertainment began with the arrival of Reel Girls, followed by a vibrant performance from traditional Irish dancers. The night continued with a fully interactive ceili led by the band TRAD Dispute, where everyone — guests and elves alike — joined in the dancing, making it an unforgettable celebration.

What It’s Like to Get Married on Inisheer

You can reach the island by ferry from Rossaveel or Doolin (approx. 45 minutes) or a short 7-minute flight from Galway. Once you arrive – stone paths, silence, horses, sea breeze and ever-changing light. It feels almost spiritual – like stepping out of time.

Ceremony at St. Mary’s Church

The ceremony took place at St. Mary’s Church – a small white chapel just a short walk from the harbor. The inside was simple, quiet and bathed in natural light. No heavy decorations – just presence, space and meaning.

One of the most visually delightful parts of the day was the bridesmaids’ styling. Each wore a different pastel-coloured dress – from soft blue to peach and lavender – perfectly matched to their bouquet and even to their own champagne glass.

Every detail – florals, glassware, dresses – was intentionally coordinated.

After the ceremony, it was time for the portrait session – and there’s hardly a better setting than Inisheer.

We started at the beach – wide, quiet and with surprisingly turquoise water. Soft light came through the clouds, casting delicate reflections on the sand.

Next, we went to An Loch Mór – the island’s peaceful lake, nestled among low hills and grass. A perfect spot for quiet, romantic moments, away from everything.

We finished at the MV Plassy shipwreck – a dramatic steel hull lying on the rocky shore. It brought an artistic, raw energy to the photos – full of history and contrast.

On the way back, we stopped for portraits among stone walls and with the ruins of O’Brien’s Castle in the background – the perfect way to complete the visual story of this wild, beautiful island.

Wedding Reception on Inisheer – Marquee Beside the Atlantic

The evening celebration took place in a bright, elegant marquee set beside Tigh Ruairí, a family-run guesthouse just a few minutes from the harbor and beach. Hidden behind stone walls and surrounded by wild island nature, this charming spot offered the perfect blend of rustic authenticity and gentle elegance – a true Inisheer gem.

The bride spent the first part of the morning in the charming Butler’s Kitchen – a cosy, rustic space at the heart of Markree Castle. The newlyweds wandered the grounds of Markree Castle, walking along winding paths with the castle in the distance and the soft evening light falling across the gardens. There was laughter, a few embraces under the trees, and a relaxed sense of “just us” before the reception began.

We found ourselves by the old boathouse, nestled among tall trees near the river – a favourite hidden spot for portraits, peaceful and close to nature. On the way, we were joined by Fionn, Markree Castle’s young Irish Wolfhound, whose gentle presence made everyone smile.
