A REAL WEDDING STORY

A rainy wedding day can be every bit as beautiful as a sunny one, especially when the setting is an Irish castle full of character.

Amy and Anthony celebrated their September wedding at Markree Castle in County Sligo on a day when the Irish weather had other plans. Rain accompanied much of their celebration, but the atmosphere inside the castle was just as memorable as the moments we managed to capture outdoors.

From elegant indoor portraits to champagne in the gardens during a brief break in the rain, and a first dance in the courtyard, their wedding showed how much beauty and variety Markree Castle can offer in changing weather.

A SEPTEMBER WEDDING AT MARKREE CASTLE

A Beautiful Celebration Between the Showers

Rain was part of Amy and Anthony’s wedding day from the beginning, so rather than depending on outdoor locations, we made the most of the beautiful spaces inside Markree Castle. Its historic interiors, elegant staircases and soft window light provided wonderful settings for natural wedding portraits.

One of the advantages of photographing weddings at Markree Castle is knowing how to adapt when the weather changes. The castle offers so many different settings that we can move between them without making the photography feel rushed or taking the couple away from their guests for too long.

When the rain eased for a short while, everyone had the chance to enjoy champagne in the gardens. It was one of those lovely, spontaneous moments that brought a different energy to the celebration.

Later, Amy and Anthony shared their first dance in the castle courtyard. With the historic surroundings adding to the atmosphere, it became another memorable part of a day that never needed perfect sunshine to feel special.

THE BEAUTY OF AN IRISH CASTLE WEDDING

Why Markree Castle Works So Beautifully on a Rainy Day

For couples planning a destination wedding in Ireland, especially those travelling from the United States, the weather can be one of the biggest uncertainties. But a rainy forecast doesn’t have to mean sacrificing beautiful wedding photographs.

Markree Castle has an atmosphere that works in every season. Its beautiful rooms offer an alternative to outdoor portraits, while the gardens and courtyard remain wonderful possibilities whenever the weather allows.

Amy and Anthony’s wedding is a lovely example of how a flexible approach, familiarity with the venue and a little patience with the Irish weather can result in a varied and personal collection of photographs.

A REAL WEDDING AT MARKREE CASTLE

A Rainy Day, Beautifully Remembered

Amy and Anthony’s wedding was a lovely reminder that rain doesn’t have to take anything away from a castle wedding. From the intimate ceremony in the chapel to portraits in Markree Castle’s historic rooms, their day was filled with genuine moments, beautiful light and plenty of laughter.

The weather gave us a few precious opportunities outdoors, including their evening dance in the courtyard. But it was the warmth of the people and the atmosphere inside the castle that made this story special. For a closer look at the venue, explore my Markree Castle wedding photography guide.

PLANNING YOUR WEDDING

A Few Questions About Rainy Weddings at Markree Castle

Can you still get beautiful wedding photos at Markree Castle if it rains?

Absolutely. Amy and Anthony’s wedding is a real example of how the castle’s chapel, grand staircase, historic rooms and window light can create a varied wedding gallery without relying on outdoor portraits.

Where can we take indoor wedding portraits at Markree Castle?

The grand staircase, Billiard Room and gallery areas near the Main Hall offer different backgrounds and moods. In this wedding gallery, you can see how we used these spaces for relaxed couple portraits, family photographs and wedding party images.

Is an outdoor first dance possible after a rainy day?

Sometimes, if the weather and arrangements allow. Amy and Anthony were able to enjoy their evening dance in the castle courtyard beneath the lights. It’s a wonderful example of making the most of a break in the rain without depending on perfect weather.
