Some of the most memorable wedding moments are the ones that make a celebration unmistakably personal.
Zoe and Mark celebrated their
wedding at Markree Castle
surrounded by family and friends. Their day combined a personal garden ceremony, the character of the castle’s historic interiors and a beautiful afternoon spent exploring the grounds.
But one moment made their story especially distinctive: a butterfly release in the gardens, bringing an unexpected sense of movement and wonder to their wedding photographs.
A Wedding Day Full of Meaningful Moments
The morning began with Zoe and Mark preparing separately at Markree Castle. With a second photographer covering another part of the preparations, we were able to document both sides of the story — the excitement, the small details and the moments shared with their wedding parties.
Their outdoor ceremony was led by a friend and included readings, live music, a unity candle ceremony involving both mothers and the warming of the wedding rings. These thoughtful traditions gave the occasion a deeply personal character.
After the ceremony, we photographed family and wedding-party groups before spending time with the couple around the gardens and inside the castle. Moving between these settings allowed us to create a varied collection of portraits while keeping the experience relaxed and natural.
Later came speeches on the castle staircase, the celebrations around dinner and another opportunity for portraits in the evening light. The day continued into dancing, with the courtyard and the people closest to Zoe and Mark becoming part of the final chapters of their story.
When Butterflies Took Flight
After the ceremony, butterflies were released in the gardens during our afternoon photography. For a brief moment, the celebration took on a completely different energy as the butterflies moved into the open air.
It was a beautiful example of how a personal idea can become part of a wedding story. These are the details that make each celebration different — and the moments I love preserving through photography.

The Moments That Made Their Day
From the anticipation of the morning to the celebrations after dark.
A Ceremony Made Their Own
With the gardens of Markree Castle as their setting, Zoe and Mark chose a ceremony filled with personal touches. Their friend Eoin officiated, both mums took part in lighting the unity candle, and a ring-warming tradition brought another meaningful moment to the celebrations.
There were readings from Zoe’s brother and one of Mark’s friends, live music, and plenty of familiar faces. The kind of ceremony where the people closest to you are part of the story, rather than simply watching it unfold.
Everyone Together, Castle Included
After the ceremony, we gathered both families and the bridal party for a few photographs with Markree Castle as the backdrop. The grand stone facade makes a beautiful setting for group portraits — a little bit of organisation, a few smiles, and everyone gets back to the celebrations.
A Little Time Away, Just the Two of Them
After the family photographs, Zoe and Mark slipped away for a little time together. We explored the woodlands and the Boathouse in the grounds of Markree Castle, making the most of the greenery and quieter corners away from the celebrations.
Before heading back to their guests, they wanted a few photographs inside the castle too. We stopped in the Billiard Room, where the darker wood and soft window light offered a completely different atmosphere from the gardens. Then it was back to the reception to celebrate with everyone.
A Butterfly Release at Markree Castle
After their wedding portraits, Zoe and Mark returned to the garden reception at Markree Castle, where guests were enjoying drinks, conversation and the beautiful castle surroundings.
Then came one of the most memorable moments of their wedding day. With family and friends gathered in the gardens, the bride and groom opened their butterfly boxes and released the butterflies into the open air. It was a wonderfully personal addition to their Markree Castle wedding, filled with genuine reactions and spontaneous moments.
Wedding Speeches on the Grand Staircase at Markree Castle
After the celebrations in the gardens, everyone gathered inside Markree Castle for the wedding speeches on the grand staircase. With family and friends gathered around, the staircase became the setting for stories, laughter and all those little reactions that make speeches such a memorable part of the day.
A Grand Entrance, Then a Little Sunset Magic
After the speeches, the celebrations moved towards the dining room at Markree Castle. The bridal party made their entrance first, followed by Zoe and Mark, welcomed by their guests. It’s always a lovely moment, full of excitement and energy before the wedding meal begins.
Later in the evening, I kept an eye on the changing light around the castle. When the conditions were right, I let Zoe and Mark know it was a good time to step outside for a few sunset wedding portraits. Just 15 minutes can make all the difference — a little time together, beautiful evening light and some of the most memorable photographs of the day.
A First Dance in the Markree Castle Courtyard
One of the things I love about photographing weddings at Markree Castle is the variety of beautiful settings for a first dance. Depending on the plans and arrangements for the day, couples may choose the terrace, gardens, archway or woodlands. The castle courtyard, however, is one of my personal favourites — and a setting I often recommend.
Zoe and Mark chose the courtyard for their first dance, surrounded by the historic character of Markree Castle. Afterwards, everyone headed inside to the dance floor, where the music picked up, the atmosphere was fantastic and the evening celebrations were well underway.
Zoe’s Experience at Markree Castle
“Our wedding was at Markree Castle, and it was clear from the start that Wojciech knew the venue extremely well. His familiarity with the castle and grounds meant he knew all the best locations for photos and made the entire process feel effortless.”

Every Wedding at Markree Castle Has Its Own Story
What made Zoe and Mark’s day memorable wasn’t only the beautiful setting. It was the personal touches, the butterfly release in the gardens, the laughter during the speeches and those few quiet minutes together in the evening light. These are the moments I love to photograph — the ones that make a wedding feel entirely their own.
Knowing Markree Castle well allows me to work with the rhythm of the day rather than interrupt it. From the changing light in the gardens to the quieter corners of the estate, I can suggest the right location when it matters and step back when the moment is best left alone.
