Wedding Planning in Ireland

Olivia O’Donnell — The Person Behind Ireland West Weddings

Planning a wedding in Ireland is about much more than choosing a beautiful venue. Behind every celebration is a carefully considered timeline, a team of suppliers and countless small decisions that allow the couple to enjoy their day.

For couples looking for a wedding planner in Ireland, I would like to introduce someone I have had the pleasure of working alongside: Olivia O’Donnell of Ireland West Weddings.

As a wedding photographer based in Sligo, I have experienced first-hand how much thoughtful planning and good communication can contribute to a wedding. My experience working with Olivia at Markree Castle gave me a genuine appreciation for her care, organisation and collaborative approach.

Meet the Planner

An Experienced Wedding Planner in the West of Ireland

Based in Enniscrone, County Sligo, Olivia runs Ireland West Weddings, helping couples create celebrations that feel personal to them. Her background includes more than 20 years in hospitality and over a decade in wedding and event planning.

Her experience spans the practical and personal sides of wedding planning: coordinating suppliers, developing schedules, understanding a couple’s priorities and helping the many moving parts of a wedding come together.

What stands out to me, however, is not simply her experience on paper. It is how that experience translates into real support for a couple and genuine teamwork with the people working around them.

A Real Wedding Experience

Working with Olivia at Markree Castle — A Photographer’s Perspective

One of the best ways to understand what a wedding planner brings to a celebration is to see how they work when the day doesn’t go exactly as expected.

I worked alongside Olivia at Amy and Anthony’s wedding at Markree Castle in Sligo. It was a beautiful celebration, but the weather presented a challenge: rain was forecast for much of the day, meaning our original photography plans needed to remain flexible.

Before the wedding, Olivia and I discussed the timeline, exchanging ideas and combining her planning experience with my knowledge of photographing weddings at Markree Castle. We approached the schedule as a team, with the couple’s experience always at the centre of our decisions.

That preparation made a real difference once the wedding day began.

Good Planning, Creative Thinking and a Little Irish Weather

Making the Most of the Morning

With rain expected later, we decided to make the most of an early opportunity to photograph the bridesmaids outdoors and capture a champagne moment with the castle in the background. It was a small decision, but an important one. As the rain continued throughout the day, we would not have had the same opportunity later.

Olivia helped coordinate the changing schedule while we worked together to keep everything moving naturally.

Working Together with the Castle Team

During the preparations, I suggested using one of the castle’s beautiful bathrooms for photographs. Its mirror, bathtub and window light offered an interesting setting for a few intimate getting-ready moments, including the groom putting on his shoes.

Olivia was immediately open to the idea and contacted the castle team to check whether the room would be ready and available. It was a lovely example of practical collaboration: a creative suggestion supported by thoughtful coordination.

Keeping Family Photographs Organised

Family photographs are an important part of a wedding, but bringing everyone together can take time, particularly when the schedule is changing because of the weather.

Olivia helped me gather family members, locate the people we needed and coordinate the groups. That support allowed me to concentrate on photographing everyone while we kept the experience as relaxed and efficient as possible.

Ten Minutes That Made the Difference

Perhaps my favourite example of our teamwork came during the evening. Despite the rain, Amy and Anthony had hoped to enjoy their first dance outside in the courtyard.

When the rain briefly stopped, we were able to take advantage of a window of roughly ten minutes. With Olivia helping coordinate the moment, the couple enjoyed their first dance in the courtyard of Markree Castle.

Without that flexibility and communication, some of the most memorable photographs of the day might never have happened.

Care That Continued into the Evening

What also impressed me was Olivia’s continued presence. She stayed into the evening celebrations, checking that things were running smoothly and remaining attentive to the couple’s needs.

From my perspective, she was caring, approachable and genuinely invested in making the day as enjoyable as possible for Amy and Anthony. It was the kind of professional relationship where we could support each other, adapt when necessary and focus on what mattered most.

For me, the value of a great wedding planner is not simply following a timeline. It is knowing when to adapt, communicating clearly and helping everyone work together for the couple.

Planning from Abroad

Planning a Destination Wedding in Ireland

For couples travelling from the United States, the United Kingdom or elsewhere, organising a wedding in Ireland can involve additional decisions. Choosing a venue, communicating with suppliers and understanding how the wedding day will unfold can be more challenging when you are planning from a distance.

A locally based planner can help bridge that distance, bringing knowledge of venues and suppliers alongside practical support throughout the planning process.

For couples considering the west of Ireland, Olivia’s local experience and understanding of wedding coordination make her someone worth speaking with about the level of planning support available.

Frequently Asked Questions

Wedding Planner in Ireland — FAQs

Is hiring a wedding planner in Ireland worth it?

For couples who would value help with planning, supplier communication and coordinating the wedding day, a planner can make a meaningful difference. The right level of support depends on the size and complexity of your celebration, your available time and how involved you would like to be.

What is the difference between a wedding planner and an on-the-day coordinator?

A wedding planner may assist with decisions and arrangements throughout the planning process. An on-the-day coordinator focuses on preparing for and managing the wedding itself, including timelines and supplier communication. The exact responsibilities depend on the service booked, so it is worth discussing the scope in advance.

Can a wedding planner help with a destination wedding in Ireland?

Yes. A planner based in Ireland can assist with local knowledge, supplier communication and practical arrangements for couples organising their celebration from overseas. Ask Olivia which services are available for your wedding plans.

How much does a wedding planner in Ireland cost?

Pricing depends on the level of planning support, the scale of the wedding and the services required. The best way to obtain an accurate price is to contact Olivia directly with your wedding details.

Why does communication between a wedding planner and photographer matter?

Good communication helps protect time for photographs while keeping the wider celebration on schedule. At Amy and Anthony’s wedding at Markree Castle, working together allowed Olivia and me to adapt family photographs, portraits and the outdoor first dance around the changing weather.

A Personal Recommendation

Why I Recommend Olivia O’Donnell

My recommendation of Olivia comes from working with her, not simply from reading about her services. I saw how she prepared, communicated with the venue, supported the couple and collaborated with me throughout a wedding day that required flexibility.

She was organised without being rigid, attentive without being intrusive and genuinely willing to work together to find the best solutions. I particularly appreciated the care she showed Amy and Anthony and her commitment to staying involved as the celebration continued into the evening.

If you are searching for a wedding planner in Ireland, especially for a celebration in the west of the country, I would be happy to recommend getting in touch with Olivia to discuss your plans.
