Markree Castle Wedding / Real US Destination Story

July 9, 2025

Some weddings live in your memory long after the day ends – and this one truly did. A real destination wedding at Markree Castle, where a joyful couple from the US brought heartfelt vows, sunshine, laughter and beautiful spontaneity to one of the most enchanting castle venues in the west of Ireland.

They chose Markree Castle for their celebration, and it couldn’t have been a better match. The day began with peaceful, candid moments in the kitchen and bridal suite, continued with a heartfelt ceremony in the castle chapel, and ended with dancing, hugs and a stunning sunset in the gardens.

As a Destination Wedding Photographer, I specialise in capturing those unscripted, documentary-style moments that make your story truly yours. Whether you’re planning an intimate elopement or a weekend-long event, I offer a relaxed approach focused on real connection and emotion – always as a Documentary Wedding Photographer and Candid Wedding Photographer.

This gallery is part of a growing collection of real weddings at Markree Castle – a place where old-world charm meets modern celebration. If you’re dreaming of a wedding in Ireland, you’ll find real inspiration here – especially if you’re looking for an Art Wedding Photographer or a relaxed, documentary-style Dublin Wedding Photographer.

Wedding Morning & First Look on the Grand Staircase

The day began quietly, with slow sips of coffee, soft conversations, and a warm buzz of excitement. The bride spent the first part of the morning in the charming Butler’s Kitchen – a cosy, rustic space at the heart of Markree Castle. Surrounded by family and close friends, this was where the story really began: toasts, details, and gentle anticipation.

As the moment to get dressed approached, everyone moved to the elegant Bridal Suite – a light-filled room with soft colours and a calm atmosphere. Emotions deepened as the dress was fastened, shoes carefully chosen, and finishing touches added. It was a moment of stillness and beauty, and as a Documentary Wedding Photographer, it’s exactly the kind of story I love to capture – real, unfiltered, and full of presence.

Meanwhile, the groom was preparing with his groomsmen in the iconic Billiard Room. With its dark wood interiors, vintage decor, and heritage feel, it created the perfect backdrop for a relaxed, masculine energy. Ties were tied, drinks were poured, and quiet focus filled the room – moments that often go unnoticed, but mean everything.

Their First Look took place on the Grand Staircase, just inside the castle’s main entrance – one of Markree Castle’s most striking features. With its sweeping curve, deep red carpet and natural light streaming through the tall windows, it’s a photographer’s dream. When they saw each other, time slowed. There were no big gestures – just a touch, a look, a shared breath. That quiet, unscripted magic is exactly why I work as a Candid Wedding Photographer and Art Wedding Photographer in Ireland.

After their First Look, the groom joined his groomsmen in the chapel, while the bride returned to the Bridal Suite for a moment of calm. We used this short window to take a few elegant portraits – just her and her bridesmen – surrounded by quiet light and gratitude. These are the in-between moments that couples often remember most.

Ceremony in the Chapel – Emotions, Vows & Whisky Toasts

The chapel at Markree Castle is a place of quiet grandeur – intimate yet majestic, with soft light falling through arched windows and a timeless sense of calm. The couple chose to keep the ceremony deeply personal, with their friend from the US stepping in as celebrant. It was one of those rare ceremonies where every word felt intentional and every glance carried weight.

Guests were seated, the music began, and the bride walked in with a quiet radiance. Their vows were emotional – a mix of tears, laughter, and gentle pauses. It was clear this wasn’t just a ritual – it was the heart of the day.

After the ceremony, the wedding party shared a symbolic toast right there in the chapel – pouring smooth Irish whiskey into elegant glasses from a vintage-style decanter. It was a moment of warmth and celebration, and such a unique, heartfelt gesture.

With everyone dressed in classic black tie, the atmosphere was both elegant and relaxed – exactly what a destination wedding in Ireland should feel like. As a Candid Wedding Photographer and Documentary Wedding Photographer, these unscripted in-between moments are what I love most.

Markree Castle Wedding – Garden, Boathouse & Castle Portraits

After the ceremony, we stepped outside for a few quiet moments together. The newlyweds wandered the grounds of Markree Castle, walking along winding paths with the castle in the distance and the soft evening light falling across the gardens. There was laughter, a few embraces under the trees, and a relaxed sense of “just us” before the reception began.

We found ourselves by the old boathouse, nestled among tall trees near the river – a favourite hidden spot for portraits, peaceful and close to nature. On the way, we were joined by Fionn, Markree Castle’s young Irish Wolfhound, whose gentle presence made everyone smile.

Before heading inside, the couple paused for a few photos on the main staircase and balcony, Irish flag in the background, then wandered through the classic rooms and the atmospheric gin bar, soaking in those last quiet moments as newlyweds. These were simple, authentic scenes – no posing, just a genuine celebration of the day and the place.

The speeches took place both in the stately rooms and along the sweeping staircase, creating an atmosphere that felt both intimate and iconic – exactly what you imagine for a castle celebration.

One of the true stars of the evening was Fionn, Markree Castle’s resident Irish Wolfhound. Relaxing by the fireplace or wandering between groups, Fionn quickly became the centre of attention. Guests couldn’t resist stopping to greet him, pose for photos, or simply enjoy his calm and gentle presence. It’s a unique, heartwarming touch that makes weddings at Markree feel like home – and for couples who love animals, Fionn is always happy to join in for a few special portraits.

About Me – A Wedding Photographer with Experience at Markree Castle

My name is Wojciech Koza, and I’m lucky enough to live just beside Markree Castle, right in the heart of Sligo. As a Destination Wedding Photographer and Documentary Wedding Photographer, I’ve photographed weddings at this extraordinary venue for years – and every time, I discover something new.

I know Markree Castle inside out: from the woodland and boathouse to the ballroom, courtyard, and its iconic staircase. I know exactly when the light fills the bridal suite just right, where to plan the perfect First Look, and how to capture those fleeting, candid moments that tell the true story of your wedding day.

Very often, I arrive even before the preparations begin – to photograph the castle and gardens at dawn, sometimes with a drone, sometimes in a quiet, documentary style. I work in a relaxed, natural and artistic way – always aiming for you to feel present, not posed, so your photos tell the real, emotion-filled story of your day.

If you’re dreaming of a wedding at Markree Castle, you can be sure I’ll capture the atmosphere in a truly personal way.
